From the Principal

We are approaching the end of the third week of our Lenten season. Last Sunday’s Gospel reading was from John and gave the story of Jesus entering the temple. When he entered the temple, he was taken aback because it was more of a market place than a temple. The Gospel tells of Jesus driving the merchants from the temple with great anger. When challenged about his position by the Jews, Jesus answered … “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it.”

As mentioned previously, the Gospel stories throughout Lent are about relationship with God. The message of this relationship is reinforced with different settings and circumstances but always comes back to the main message – to live life to the fullest we must put our faith and trust in God. The story of the temple has a greater meaning than what simply was happening. The temple was meant to be a place where people could go to meet God and pray. However, over time other distractions and temptations had taken over and could creep into this place of reflection and prayer. Also, when Jesus spoke of raising the temple in three days, he did not speak of a material build, but rather the temple being himself. If we were to use this same metaphor with our own lives, we could question the health of our own relationship with God. What are the distractions and temptations that have crept into distracting from our relationship with God. In saying that the temple was his body, Jesus was saying that all that his place of prayer and reflection is through himself as person and all that he does is a part of that relationship. If we think of this in personal terms, if our body is our temple, how do we enhance our own relationship with God and have other distractions and temptations changed our own thoughts and actions for the worst.

Yesterday, we celebrated International Women’s Day. In an all boys’ school, it is especially important that we take some time to celebrate the support and work of the many great women within our lives. I would like to make special mention of our ERA for Change group who spoke to the full school assembly about the significance of this day. They also arranged for our young men to write messages of support and thanks to key women in their lives and they were posted on the entrance wall to the College. The ERA for Change students also wore purple shirts around the school all day with some key messages and facts about some of the disadvantages that women currently face in society. As a College staff we held with a special morning tea to celebrate the wonderful work, expertise and collegiality that our many women staff members bring to our College community on a daily basis.

We are now approaching a time when many assignments are becoming due. This would have meant that your son(s) have submitted assessment items through our new Realm system. The drafts and final pieces would have been, or will be, marked on-line and parents will also have the opportunity to see the assessment piece and the teacher comments and marking criteria. We believe that this will be far more useful to parents than an end of term report that gives general overall comments. During next week, I will forward a detailed communication as to our future direction for giving feedback and reporting student work. This position is a result of the community feedback to our reporting system during the first semester last year and the new capabilities of our new student learning management system (Realm).

Last night, the Mr Paul Chesher from Business Improvement Australia (BIA) presented to our Year 10 students and their parents regarding the work that his company does with our young men. This is the fourth year that we have worked with BIA. They assist our young men in considering what careers might be available to them when they leave school and what considerations they could make in terms of subjects to select in Years 11 and 12 to meet these career possibilities. The reports that are given to the parents and students are very thorough, but only one further piece of information available to the students and families when considering their senior study pathways. The presentation was aimed at explaining the program to our students and parents. Our young men in Year 10 will start the program in the second week of next term. There were many attendees at the presentation and I hope that it was useful and relevant to all who could attend.

We are also rapidly approaching our exam period in the various year levels. It is important that each of the students, particularly, the older ones are in a study pattern that includes good revision time as well as completing written homework. It is during this time that schoolwork and study needs to be more of a priority to the young men. Likewise, the Years 11 and 12 students have their exam timetables and should be preparing a study timetable for the days during the block exam week to ensure that they have given sufficient time to each subject in their preparations.

On Monday, our Swimming team competed in the AIC Swimming Championships. Our team finished sixth overall and many personal bests (PBs) were set within the races. I would like to congratulate Ms Kelsey Duke and the coaching staff for all their time and efforts over the Term 4 last year and during this year. I would also like to thank the swimmers for their great spirit ad efforts over the course of their training and during the championship. I might be biased, but I thought that our supporters were outstanding. The Year 10 cohort were very well led by the senior students and they certainly showed great spirit and support.

Last Friday morning I received a letter from Mr Andrew Laming MP. He is the member for Bowman and on the Federal Government Education Standing Committee. In his letter, Mr Laming congratulated our senior cohort of 2017 who undertook an Overall Position (OP) pathway for their outstanding efforts. He had undertaken some analytical work with the OP results for all 370 secondary schools across the state and placed our young men’s results within the top quarter of the overall state results. I believe that this is testimony to the dedicated work done by our all our staff. As a staff, we constantly remind ourselves that each of us has input into the learning roadmap of all the students. Teaching and learning is not done in isolation of year levels or subjects.

This weekend we compete against Iona College in cricket and volleyball. Our junior teams are at Iona and we host them here in the older year levels (9-12). I wish all the players the best of luck and I hope that each enjoys his game.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes – College Principal

Academic Mentoring

Earlier this term I communicated via The Calling that our Years 6 to 10 students participated in their Tutor Group Mentoring lesson and Years 11 and 12 students met with their Academic Mentor. Part of this process involves students completing some questions online. This allows us to identify any students who may need further intervention but it also allows me to ‘take the pulse’ on how we are progressing, collectively, as a school. Last year was our inaugural year for this program and I shared the summary data via The Calling in Terms 1 and 3. Over the coming weeks, I will once again share...

Over the coming weeks, I will once again share summary data that may be of interest to you, as parents. We will continue to work with students to develop an understanding of the power of hard work, effort and persistence so that in future years their satisfaction with their results increases.

Completion-Rate-for-Target-Setting-and-S

The following graphs show the results of the affective data questions that were asked of students over the past three mentoring sessions:

Average-Satisfaction-with-Results.jpg?mt

Average-Effort-Applied.jpg?mtime=2018030

Average-Happiness.jpg?mtime=201803080907

It is visually apparent that there is a correlation between level of effort applied and level of satisfaction with results from the previous semester. We certainly appreciate the honest and transparent way students answer these questions; the next challenge is supporting them to apply greater effort so that greater satisfaction with results occurs!

With only 18 months of data, it is too early to draw any conclusions regarding the level of happiness and sense of belonging at any particular year level but at this stage a ‘dip’ in Year 10 is noted, with an increase from Year 10 to 12.

Every activity involved the students having to design an object using set materials. The ingenuity of our boys was quite amazing to watch throughout the day. Although we didn’t win the overall competition our students were designing, building, testing and modifying their designs which is all in day’s work of a scientist.

“We are called to be and to form young people to be the loving, compassionate, and inclusive face of God in our world.” Dr Wayne Tinsey, EREA Executive Director

Sometimes in schools our calendars become so full we can occasionally feel like we have just dumped more and more things into them almost at random. For Catholic schools this should never be the case because everything that happens here should reflect the presence of God at the heart of all that we do. The words from Dr Wayne Tinsey quoted above are a reminder that the education and formation that we offer to our young men and our whole College community is about helping us to be the face of our loving God in every aspect of our lives.

On 8 March we mark International Women’s Day, a time to remind our young men of the significance of women in our world. A time to challenge behaviours and attitudes that do not show respect and enhance the dignity of people. This year the slogan #PushforProgress reminds us that women in our world don’t always get the respect they deserve. IWD reminds us that in spite of more than a hundred years of political activism there is still a way to go before equality could be said to exist both here in Australia and around the world. There is a call to all of us to be people of action who are ready to transform our world.

The Season of Lent is a call to us to get our house in order so that we can experience the new life offered to us in the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter. The call of Lent asks us to remember our dependence on God and yet to do our part to make the Gospel alive, in our lives, by prayer and working for justice – St Ignatius of Loyola (a favourite saint for Edmund Rice) phrased it as – “Pray as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on you.”

Coming up in Identity –

  • Friday 16 March 8:45am the College will celebrate the Feast Day of St Patrick with a Mass in the Christian Brothers Building, all are welcome.
  • 12-16 March is our College Indigenous Cultural Celebration Week. Throughout the week there will be a number of different activities happening to highlight the significance of Indigenous cultures in Australia both past, present and future.
  • Every week one tutor group in each House will be asked to contribute non-perishable food items to make up emergency food packs which will be donated to Sandbag Community Centre to help people in our local community in need. Please help out when your Tutor Group is asked to contribute.

I must begin this week’s Calling article by thanking all the staff and students for their efforts at the AIC swimming carnival. Once again, those young men who represented our College in the pool deserve all the superlatives placed upon them. The amount of training that goes into what many hope is less than 35seconds is simply amazing. I certainly don’t mean to down play the achievements of these men, but I would like to once again concentrate my comments on those who attended as spectators. The Year 10 students must first be acknowledged for the manner in which they got behind their College leaders on what was a hot and draining day. The Year 10 men walked in at 9:00am stood and cheered not sitting down until 2:00pm. Being their last year, the men of Year 12 certainly made the most of their day. If your son is in Year 12 please ensure that you discuss their efforts on Monday over the dinner table, if his voice has returned. I am sure that his face will light up and he will have stories to tell.

It is usually at this stage of the article I begin to discuss those men who took an easy option choosing to stay home and work on assignments. I can say with great pride that the attendance was outstanding from both grades. Thank you men, and thank you to our parents for further strengthening our partnership.

As I have stated previously, many families when asked why they have chosen St Patrick’s highlight our strong sense of community. When students fail to support their mates on occasions such as the AIC Carnival they are eroding the very community and support network they are so proud of. Thank you to all our families for the support they showed our community of St Patrick’s. When it’s your sons turn to shine I have no doubt the Paddy’s men will turn up in their droves.

Hair Cuts – Week 7

It is around week 7 that many of our students go for their second haircut for the term. As the College has stated many times, St. Patrick’s has a clear expectation when it comes to haircuts. Can I ask that we work together to ensure that all our young men have a hair style that is within the College guidelines.

In recent years a hair style has emerged were young men cut their hair in a manner where one very short side moves rapidly to a much longer length. (“Detached”) At times young men also have a track cut along the part. The College has expressed its disapproval of this style of haircut to the student body on a number of occasions. Please ensure that all new haircuts are blended. If your son chooses to cut his hair in this manner again the College will ask that he return home until his hair has been corrected.

The second style that is emerging is the extra-long fringe which students tie up in a ‘man bun’ outside school hours. Such styles cause numerous safety concerns in subjects such as science and industrial arts. They also allow young men to hide and withdraw from those around them.

The College makes every effort to implement the same hair policy for all students. In fairness to all our young men we ask that all families adhere to the College hair policy which can be found in the College diary.

Fight the good fight.

The 1st VI Volleyball also won in a tough five set game, winning the last set 16-14. The 3rd and 9B Volleyball teams remain undefeated.

This week St Patrick’s are drawn against Iona, with our senior teams playing at home. The Paddy’s Battalion will be wanting all students to come along and support both the cricketers at Curlew Park and volleyballers in the Callan Centre and Christian Brother Building.

Sign on has now been completed for both Football and Rugby. Due to the increased number of students wishing to participate, St Patrick’s require enthusiastic, experienced coaches in rugby and football to assist in our programs. If you would like to coach or referee this season please email the coordinator. The contact details are below.

Students and community members are invited to participate in a practice Shore 2 Gate run this Sunday morning. The Shorncliffe Shufflers will be running the course departing the Plaza area at 6:00am. A swim afterwards is always a great reward after the run.

75 enthusiastic runners arrived on Wednesday morning to begin the Cross Country season. Training is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 6:30am for a 6:45am departure. The first Cross Country meet of the season is on next Friday at Nudgee College. Racing starts at 4:00pm. Interested students should see Mr Crowley or Mr Gold to reserve a seat on the bus. Students are not required to attend all training sessions if their schedule is too demanding. Students are requested to discuss training times with the coaches to prioritise sessions.

A reminder for students who have signed on for Cross Country, Rugby and Football, that the in-season sports of Cricket and Volleyball training sessions always takes priority over all other preseason sports sessions. Exams are fast approaching and students are reminded to take a ‘balanced’ approach to their sporting commitments during this time. Students are asked to communicate with sports specific coordinators or directly with coaches well in advance if a problem is identified.

To the slightly younger crowd, you’ll hear Pier Pressure perform Scattered. Of course this is all interspersed with a great range of musical styles and genres to enjoy throughout the evening. Year 12 Report

On Wednesday night, the Year 12.1 debating team travelled into Spring Hill to face Padua at Brisbane Grammar School.

We were the affirmative side of the topic, “We should ban The Bachelor”.

In the weeks leading up to the debate we spent our time researching points, creating arguments, brainstorming ideas and coming up with potential points of information.

We set out on the night with three strong speakers: Nicholas Easey, Tom Kelman and Maxwell Freedman, who all spoke very well.

Unfortunately, in an extremely close fought battle, we lost to Padua College.

Other Chess News

The swell is building as we prepare to defend our AIC Championship.During February eight of our Senior Players trekked to Churchie for the Brisbane Interschool Chess Championships. Yet again our young men showed their mettle as they battled against GPS and EQ schools. We fielded teams in Division A and Division B.Our A Team (Benjamin Peachey, Jack Bolton, River Brunsmann and Mason Brown) were up against extremely talented opposition including the current Queensland Junior Champion. These gentlemen showed great skill and courage and certainly did a fine job.

Our B Team (Jack Tobe, Oliver Howe, Oscar O’Brien and Sean Grew Figuerola) were at their most awesome and came away victors. These gentlemen were acknowledged at this weeks assembly were they received their Championship medallions.

Next week brings the annual College Chess Championships which is open to all students. With three divisions held over three days this is a great warm-up for the upcoming AIC season. There will be no regular Chess Club next week.

We are counting down until AIC!
