This Week

From the College Principal

As this is our last week of the year for our students, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all families for your support throughout this year. We have much to be grateful for as a community, and I certainly appreciate the wonderful people that we have within the St Patrick’s community.

As this is our last week of the year for our students, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all families for your support throughout this year. We have much to be grateful for as a community, and I certainly appreciate the wonderful people that we have within the St Patrick’s community.

During this week, I had the opportunity to attend the end of year liturgies and morning teas for our young men in Years 5 and 6. I cannot get over how much the young men have grown throughout the year, not just in physical size but also in confidence and manner. I hope that all the families, in Year 5 particularly, have enjoyed their first year at the College. Likewise, next year will see our Year 6 students enlarge as a cohort with new students to start their secondary schooling. I am sure that this will also be an exciting time for them.

During this week, much action has taken place in the rooms at the bottom of the Morrissey Building. Work will start on rebuilding this area as soon as next Monday. We will have a great new area ready to start the new academic year that will house our exceptional learner’s room as well as a refurbished Year 5 classroom and two other rooms.

The end of this term will also be quite a sad time for our staff as we will farewell some long-serving members as well as others who have been with us on short term contracts. The full-time staff members who will be leaving include Mrs Nicole Draisey, Mr Peter Bancroft who are both retiring and have been at the College for 20 years or longer. Mr Steven Lawrence and Mr Timothy Merrett have both been at St Patrick’s for over 10 years. They will also leave us at the end of next week.

I would also like to thank Mr Kev Van der Weide, Ms Jan Martens, Ms Nastassia O’Hearn, Mrs Megan McVeigh, Mrs Sara Lodder and Mrs Taryn Clarke who have been a part of the College for varying times of the year replacing teachers on leave. Their contribution to our community during this time has been very much appreciated.

Also, Mrs Sandra Cartwright will be taking a 12 month break for leave, and Mrs Kate Belfrage and Mrs Ashleigh Walker, will also be absent on Maternity Leave from the beginning of next year. I hope that they all enjoy their leave during the year and Kate and Ashleigh enjoy becoming mothers for the first time.

Over the coming weeks before Christmas, there are two significant staff and student trips. Our Indian immersion group will leave this Sunday. Eight students will be accompanied by Mr Luke Royes, Mrs Janet Garside and Mr Adam McPhee. They will spend just over two weeks in India. The following Thursday night, 15 students will leave for a European experience accompanied by Mr Matthew Seers, Mrs Anne-Maree Bliss and Mr Michael Alvisio. I would like to thank each staff member for making themselves available to provide these opportunities to our young men.

We also have a group of Volleyball players attending a tournament in Melbourne. The team will be accompanied by Mr Steve Copping and Mr Clint McGoldrick. There will also be many clinics, camps and competitions for Volleyball, Swimming and Cricket during the latter stages of the January holidays. I would like to recognise the work of Mr Doug Locke, Mr Daniel Nethery and Mr Jacob Jennings in planning these activities and thank the staff who will be involved with running some of the sessions.

Over the course of the final two weeks of this year, the College Leadership Team have been planning our priorities for 2019. These priorities will form the basis for our whole school professional development for the teaching staff during the course of next year. I will share these priorities with all families during our information nights at the beginning of next year.

We recently received our Year 12 QCS results. We are very happy with the overall results and how much the students have improved since we started gathering their performance data over their last two years. 53% of our students obtained an A or B on the test. This is a strong result for the cohort and is, once again, above State averages. Each young man who was OP eligible will receive his final Overall Position (OP) Score in the week leading into the Christmas period.

We finished our school year with the students by celebrating the season of Advent and having a little bit of fun with Jingles and Snowflake. We left the young men with the message that if we really mean “Live Jesus in our Hearts”, we must show this by our words and actions. These ideals cannot be promoted but left at our school gates. I would encourage all families to have this discussion with their son during the Advent period and reinforce our message of bringing out the best and love of others.

Live Jesus in our hearts

From the Deputy Principal

With the end of year upon us I would like to sincerely thank all the parents for your wonderful support during the year. The role of parents within the College community and the support of their son is vital to the success of a school. St Patrick’s has had a very successful year and one in which growth has continued to occur. This has been enhanced by the positive role played by our parents.

I would like to thank the following staff who will finish their journey at the end of the year:

The end of the school year brings the holidays upon us and in many cases the question of what to do to keep our sons engaged. Hopefully, the holidays will be a time for families to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Most important in this is spending time together. The greatest gift we can give our children is time together. Make the most of these opportunities and enrich your son’s life. I wish everyone a safe and joyous Christmas.

Start of School Year 2019 —All Years 5, 7 and 12 and new students will commence school on Wednesday, 30 January. All students will attend from Thursday, 31 January.

I would like to thank and congratulate all staff, students and parents for the great support provided to me this year, as well as the enormous contribution they have made to the St Patrick’s community throughout 2018.

Have a wonderful Christmas.

From the Dean of Students

I always find in my position, the last week of school for the year to be a roller coaster. I witness all the emotions - the ups and downs of an entire term in one week. Staff are doing their best to ensure students they are prepared, and then they go home to mark into the early hours of the morning. I always find in my position, the last week of school for the year to be a roller coaster. I witness all the emotions - the ups and downs of an entire term in one week. At the start of the week, the stress of exams is written all over the faces of both staff and students. Staff are doing their best to ensure students they are prepared, and then they go home to mark into the early hours of the morning. Students are faced with the pressure to perform, or the reality of their efforts this term hits them like a truck, as they now realise they didn’t work as hard as they should have. As the week progresses, the stress and fatigue slowly morphs into smiles and happiness because once again, for another year, they have fallen across the finish line and now can look forward to the joy of Christmas.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone for a great term, I look forward to welcoming our young men back in 2019, healthy and recharged ready to tackle another year in the green and gold.

Fight the good fight

Darren Kearney – Dean of Students

As the 2018 school year closes, it is time to reflect on the outstanding year the students of St Patrick’s have accomplished on and off the sporting field. This, along with numerous other premierships and high team placings in the top 3 in other sports and competitions. This, along with numerous other premierships and high team placings in the top 3 in other sports and competitions. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by the young men is to be commended. 2018 was about continuing to ensure ‘balance’ was achieved between academics and co-curricular opportunities. The College Year Book documents all our successes in the AIC Sports and individual student representative honours.

Our Sports Program has many personnel that make it run efficiently. Thank you to Mr Dan Nethery, Mr Jake Jennings and Mrs Dianne Twist for their tireless work throughout the year. To the many staff and community who take on sport coordinator, coaching and managerial roles in the specific sports, your dedication is very much appreciated by myself and the students. To the parents who assist coordinators, coaches and managers in transporting students to training and competition games and purchasing all required uniforms and supporting the many College sport tours and activities - thank you. The Sport Support Group led by Mr Steve Cowell, Mr John Upson, Br Chris Pritchard and especially our canteen supervisors Mr David Row and Mrs Anne-Marie Percival for keeping us well feed during competition days. And finally, to the 1300 plus students who throughout the year enthusiastically participate in the various sports and activities, well done. I hope you have enjoyed yourself, and we look forward to sport in 2019.

To those families leaving our community, thank you for your support of the many years. We wish your son, and your family all the very best for the coming years. Don’t be strangers, come along during 2019 to reconnect with the community. Back to Shorncliffe Day will be held on Saturday 1 June!

Over the holidays our senior cricketers will be competing in trial games and attending camp. Cricket trails will begin for all age groups starting the week of 14 January for those students not on family vacations. Swim Camp, organised by Ms Kelsey Duke, will spend three exhausting days on the Gold Coast just before the College year begins. All sport specific information will be available for signed on students and parents on REALM.

The first trial game for all students who have signed on for Australian Rules Football, Cricket and Volleyball will be Saturday 2 February against Villanova College.
