Students not returning in 2019

This Week

From the College Principal

Over the past weeks, the Year 12 students have undertaken a Rite of Passage program led by Darren Kearney and the House Deans. This has been a time of listening to others and reflecting about themselves and their own journey through school. They held their final stage of the program throughout today. We will hold our Farewell Assembly next Monday and the students will then leave to prepare for their final exams. Their year will finally finish with the graduation Mass and dinner on Thursday 15 November.

As we farewell our young Men of Action, I would like to share the following reflection.

We are missioned to be Christ’s hands, words and presence in our world today. We are to be Him: feeding the hungry. Those who are hungry for bread, for understanding, for love. We are to be Christ filling the hunger for those who need to be wanted, those who need to be somebody to somebody. You are missioned to be His touch and smile that calms fears and fills the loneliness of being unwanted and unloved. Our words will be His words; encouraging, guiding, supporting, building up, not breaking down. Our ears will be His, listening to those who need to unburden themselves. Our hands and smile and words will be welcome, support and heal and in doing so, Christ will be welcome, support and heal. We are missioned right here, right now, to be Christ in our world.

The message is quite simple. Rather than looking around to find the right people, I must first be the right person! The first actions, and possibly the only actions, that I control are my own. I always look upon this piece of writing as a challenge to myself and what I do to make the world a better place for others. At St Patrick’s we strive to develop young Men of Action who will make a difference to the world. Here is a very practical way to make that happen.

Whilst the final two weeks include many opportunities to farewell the senior students, they are also important weeks of schooling for everyone. It is most important that each young man plans well and studies hard for his exams so that he can achieve his best possible results. Leaving everything to the night before will not help them to achieve to their potential.

We held our final Trimester Awards ceremony last Tuesday. During the assembly, awards were given to students who participated in Basketball, Tennis and Track and Field over the last term.It was also an opportunity to thank Mr Doug Locke for his wonderful service as Director of Sport for the past four years. Doug has decided to step down from the role next year. However, he will remain with us as a member of the PE staff. Mr Daniel Nethery will undertake the role next year.

During this week, two of our long serving staff members informed me of their intention to retire at the end of this year. Ms Nicole Draisey started working at St Patrick’s in 1987 as a teacher of English, Economics and Legal Studies. During her teaching career with us she has also undertaken the roles of Head of Curriculum – English and Head of Daily Organisation. Nicole’s attention to detail and organisational skills were outstanding. I would like to thank her for the great work that she has done over her many years with us and wish her the very best in her retirement.

Mr Ross Dodt has worked at Curlew Park for 12 years. Ross also had two sons attend the College and also chaired the College Sports Support Group for some years. His contribution to our playing fields has been outstanding. Ross has been battling with illness recently and will remain on sick leave until he finishes employment on 16 November. Once again, I would like to wish Ross the very best in his retirement.

We hold our Celebration of Excellence tonight. I am looking forward to congratulating so many young men for their efforts across the year. It is also an opportunity for us to formally thank the entire Year 12 cohort. Their leadership and support for the College across this year has been excellent. The student body will farewell them as a school community during next Monday’s final assembly.

I attended a Principal’s Forum this morning. It was facilitated by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and was aimed to update us about the final stages of the new QCE 2020 introduction. The system will finally start next year with our Year 11 cohort (2019). Much work and effort has been put into this and we are looking forward to getting under way. I must also congratulate the QCAA for their planning and roll out of professional development, information sessions and resources over the past few years. It has been excellent and made our job to prepare so much easier.

Please keep Mr Alec Gold and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Alec’s younger sister passed away quite suddenly last night.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes – College Principal

Jim Kwik - Brain Hacks and Study Tips

At the College assembly last week, I introduced the students to the work of an inspirational man in Jim Kwik. Jim is an avid lifelong learner and is fascinated by his brain and learning (I cannot take credit for finding him – Peter Bancroft, our Mooney House Dean and a man who never stops learning and being curious, suggested him).

Jim has suffered some significant brain trauma in his life but has worked to learn about how his brain works to aid in his recovery. Along the way he has developed wonderful insight into how to optimise learning. If we are to be successful in our work educating our young men, we must ensure we are teaching them about how to learn. I shared with the students what Jim tells us about our brain (his top ten brain hacks to a better memory He challenges us not to say “I forgot” and that there is no such thing as a bad memory - just an untrained one. Neuroscience and our knowledge of neuroplasticity supports this. His top ten brain hacks are:

  1. A good brain diet – eat brain friendly foods
  2. Killing ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts)
  3. Exercise
  4. Brain nutrients
  5. Positive peer group
  6. A clean environment (clean and tidy study space)
  7. Sleep
  8. Brain protection
  9. New learnings (novelty)
  10. Stress management

I also shared some of his speed study “secrets”. They are all logical and intuitive but often students (and adults) will forget to be mindful of how we can best study and learn.

  • Stop multitasking – there is no such thing, rather we just switch between tasks and ultimately none of the variety of tasks we are switching between get the attention they deserve.
  • Stop cramming. Memory is formed by multiple exposures over a period of time.
  • Stop akrasia – acting against our own better judgment. Based on Pareto’s principle that we will often spend 80% of our time achieving 20% of our goals.
  • Use spaced repetition – this helps us create a higher number of beginnings and ends to our learning – and our memory has a tendency to remember what we learn at the start and at the end of a lesson.

I have shared these links on the Teaching and Learning page on REALM and have encouraged our students to visit and engage with Jim Kwik via those links, or to search the internet for his work. He has several great podcasts that our students (and all of us as lifelong learners) could benefit from.

Our Year 10 cohort

This week I emailed the Year 10 cohort regarding exam blocks moving forward. I have included a copy of the email below.

“As you will be aware, you are moving into a new system of senior schooling. In this new system, you will find that assessment and exams can happen at different times to what you would normally expect. Your work is arranged into units and there will be many times that the traditional “semesters” of work don’t occur with exams happening in the middle of the term.

Due to some subjects starting unit 1 this term, there are fewer exams than usual. As such, there will be no exam block for Year 10 at the end of this term. This will be disappointing for some of you, but we need to maximise your class time and cannot justify an exam block where your attendance is only for exams, if there are limited exams occurring.

There will still be an exam block in Term 3 next year (Monday Week 9 until Wednesday of Week 10). In Term 4 of Year 12, you will also have no scheduled classes. We will also allow for the use of the access lesson (2 per week) in Year 11 and 12, to be used at times for group and independent study and subject tutorials. We may still use exam blocks at times over the next two years, if a large number of exams fall at the same time, but these may not occur at the traditional end of term times.

It is important that we provide enough time for you to be in class learning material for your subjects, as well as providing enough time for you to review and study individually and in groups. We will work to ensure the balance between these two is ideal for you and your progress in senior school.”

TIMMS assessment

Students in the class 8C have been selected to participate in a Mathematics and Science assessment. The TIMSS assessment is designed to compare schools across the world (like PISA testing). We were selected as a College and the TIMSS group selected 8C. I spoke with the students this week about it and although they were not overly excited at the prospect of another assessment (after ACER and the NAPLAN School Readiness Test), they assured me they would do their best. Which is all we want them to do! The test will be in class, in Periods 1 and 2 on Wednesday 7 November. Students do not need to prepare in any way.

Mr Troy Schultz – Dean of Teaching and Learning

The last Sports Awards Ceremony was held on Tuesday. Over 210 students were presented with trophies, medallions and pennants acknowledging their efforts on the sporting field for the second half of the year. Thank you to the 150 plus parents and friends who attended to support the many award winners. During the assembly Jarred Megaw was presented with the Pierre De Coubertin Award. This award is presented by the Australian Olympic Committee to student athletes across Australia who have represented their school and district/regions/State in higher level teams in more than three sports, over a number of years. Jarred was required to apply and submit a creative piece outlining his interpretation of the “Olympic Ideal’. Congratulations to all award winners and more importantly well done to all the students who participated in the St Patrick’s sporting program in Term 3 and 4.

On Monday the AIC Balharry Golf Championships were held at Indooroopilly Golf Course. The College was well represented in the individual competition by Harper Bishop and Lachlan Nolan. Unfortunately to enter a team St Patrick’s required four players. We hope in 2019 a number of our younger players who have participated in some of our social Sandgate Golf Club afterschool games are able to obtain a Golf Link handicap. Lachlan was our best performer on the day having a 97 gross.

2019 trials and training have begun for a number of teams. Students who have signed on can access the time and venue information on REALM. Students travelling to Boondall Sports Centre for Volleyball trials need to either organise private transport to Boondall or travel on the train with the majority of the students attending. Students will need a Go Card to use the train. Coaches will be waiting at Boondall on the student’s arrival. All sports activities require parents to be prompt in collecting students at 5:00pm.

Outstanding Student Achievements

SPC 1st XI Football captain Daniel Champness has been selected in the National Youth League playing with Newcastle Jets (Youth). Good luck Daniel.

SPC_BacktoShorncliffeDay_20180519_EPX023

Brandon Merrick has continued his excellent year on the netball court by being named in the 20 years and under Queensland team to compete at the Nationals in Melbourne. Well done.

Last weekend 13 students participated in the All Schools 7’s Rugby Championships. In very hot conditions the students played a number of pool games progressing through to the Plate Final. Unfortunately losing the final 25-21 to Matthew Flinders College. It was a tremendous effort considering the team had a very limited preparation. Eight players were names in the initial training squad for possible Queensland selection later this year at National Championships. Thanks to Dan Nethery for his organisation and coaching the team. The following represented the College: Conrad Skelton, Morgan Prendergast, Taelyn Nukunuku, Connor O’Regan, Cruz Alexander, Connor Scurr, Jett Bradley, Luke Fitzgerald, Jack Smith, Okaw Obonno, Ethan Rees, Antione Tucker and Cody Payne.

Past students are doing well on the Rugby field, Jeral Skelton and Lachlan Connors have both been selected in the Australian U20 squad. Liam Prendergast was reportedly unlucky to miss selection in the same squad but has now been added to the Reds Academy.
