This Week

From the Principal

Welcome back to the last term of the school year. I would like to also make special welcome to the new students and families who began with us this term. Traditionally the fourth term is always the shortest term of the year. This year is no exception with students in Year 12 graduating in the seventh week and the rest of the school exiting in the eighth week. Welcome back to the last term of the school year. I would like to also make special welcome to the new students and families who began with us this term. Traditionally the fourth term is always the shortest term of the year. This year is no exception with students in Year 12 graduating in the seventh week and the rest of the school exiting in the eighth week. The final week is a marking, reporting and professional development week for the teaching staff.

Over the holiday period we had students from Year 11 and staff involved in immersion opportunities. Firstly, Mr Alec Gold and Mr Chris Walsh travelled to Timor Leste with four of our young men. They joined forces with staff and students from St Laurence’s and St Edmund’s Colleges to build a community hall for one of the villages as well as assist with maintenance and repairs with other facilities. The other group of students travelled with Mr Tim Kenny and Mr Nic Consiglio to Noonkanbah. This is a remote indigenous community in Western Australia. During their visit the young men worked with students within the school. Later this month some of their students will also join our community for a short period of time. We are particularly thankful to the staff members who could travel with the students to allow them such experiences.

Mr Frank Torrisi has also been travelling on an immersion with a group of EREA senior leaders over the holiday period and during this week. Frank has been to Ireland and India during this time. He will return to work on Monday.

I would like to also congratulate Ms Elizabeth Gaber and Mr Troy Schultz. During this week, they have been attending the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) conference in Sydney. They were accepted to present a paper on the work that they have been doing at the College in the areas of academic tracking and mentoring. It is wonderful to see that the great work that they have been doing to also be shared with other schools across the country.

Over the holiday break and during this week, Lachlan Connors has been training and competing with the Australian Schoolboys Rugby Team. Lachlan has played against an Australian Schools Barbarians team and the Fijian Under 18 team this week and will play against New Zealand Schools tomorrow afternoon.

By now, your son(s) should have received their results for the assessments that they completed at the end of the last term. It would be a good time to talk with them about their results and how they are going with reaching their targets by the end of the year. Whilst this last term might be short in days, it still carries high expectations for school work and outcomes. This is particularly pertinent for our Year 12 students. Please do not accept or believe the urban myth about the last term of Year 12 not counting for much.

I would like to thank all the parents who gave feedback regarding the proposed College Shared Vision document. This information will be collated and amendments will be made to the document where relevant. This will then drive some of the initiatives for the next five-year strategic plan.

On 17-19 May this year, the College undertook an EREA School Renewal. You may remember that at the time, I explained that this is a part of a five-year cyclical process completed by EREA to review the programs and practices of the College to ensure that we are authentic to the EREA Mission and Charter. The report has now been compiled and approved by the EREA Council. I will publish a copy of the review as soon as possible. This will be done through communications from Mrs Jackie Upton. It is a very strong affirmation and indicative of the practices of the College over a lengthy period.

During the first three days of next week, our Year 11 students will be participating in their leadership program. The purpose of this program is to prepare the student body for their leadership roles as the senior student body in 2018. The workshops will be facilitated by staff, students and external agencies. The program will take place at the College on Monday and Tuesday and the students and House Deans will be off-campus on Wednesday. The program will also run into the evenings over the first two days. In my experience, these programs are always energizing and positive experiences for all the participants; staff and students. I look forward to being a part of this year’s program.

Our final sport for this year is Track and Field. This Friday afternoon will be the first of three lead-up meets before the championships to be held at QSAC on 24-25 October. This year our Year 11 and Year 9 students will attend the Championships to support our athletes.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes – College Principal

Dean of Administration and Business Intelligence Report

On the last day of Term 3, our top Year 12 academic performers and our elite athletes were invited to attend a Scholarship Presentation here at school. We had representatives from UQ, QUT, ACU, Griffith and University of the Sunshine Coast. We were also fortunate to have 2016 distinguished old boy, Jeremiah Dufourq speak to the boys about his own experience of successfully applying for the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship and his cadetship with a highly reputable engineering company.

We were also fortunate to have 2016 distinguished old boy, Jeremiah Dufourq speak to the boys about his own experience of successfully applying for the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship and his cadetship with a highly reputable engineering company.

This was an opportunity for the boys to hear exactly what is available to them at each of the universities, both in their first year and years beyond, and to hear tips on how to maximise their success in receiving a scholarship. Thank you to Mrs Pam Brooks and Mr John Zappala for their assistance in organising this event. I remind Year 12 students to ensure they meet the deadlines of the various universities as they absolutely will not accept late applications for scholarships. I would also encourage them to take advantage of Mr Zappala’s kind offer to assist with the application process.

During the holidays, all current Year 8 to 10 students received an email from me advising them of their elective subjects for 2018. I have asked them to communicate this with parents to assist with stationery and booklist orders. If there are any concerns or issues please do not hesitate to contact me or Mr Chris Campbell, Dean of Teaching and Learning.

Our current Year 7 students will be given the opportunity to nominate preferences for their Arts subjects in Year 8, 2018.They will nominate, in order of preference, an Arts subject (Drama, Music or Visual Art) for Term 1, 2 and then Semester 2.Students will meet next week to hear about the options and how to access the online subject selection program. These nominations will be due Friday, 13 October 2017.Ms Kate Albury will be communicating this with parents and students. If you have any questions regarding this process please contact her (kalbury@stpatricks.qld.edu.au).

ACER Testing

Next week from Wednesday to Friday students in Years 5-9 will complete a series of ACER tests. This testing was undertaken in Term 1 this year. We wish to retest students in Term 4 as a means of tracking student performance and improvement.

Each class will complete one test per day. The tests cover English and Mathematics as well as general aptitude. All tests will be conducted in the Christian Brothers Building.

Could I ask that parents check with their sons to ensure they have a fully charged laptop on each of the three days.

Community - a Presence of Love

Both the Timor Leste and Noonkanbah Immersions occurred across the break. Each of the young men did a great job of representing our community in the places they visited. Although Timor and Noonkanbah are very different communities they both share a history of people struggling to take ownership of their land and culture as well as of encountering issues about establishing their own identities. Immersions always remind me of the power of people to transform the world, when they live together as a community. The hospitality of the people...

Although Timor and Noonkanbah are very different communities they both share a history of people struggling to take ownership of their land and culture as well as of encountering issues about establishing their own identities. Immersions always remind me of the power of people to transform the world, when they live together as a community. The hospitality of the people is a transforming experience in itself and a real gift to our young men. A huge thank you to all the staff who made the immersions possible.

Year 10 students are invited to consider applying for one of the Solidarity Immersion experiences in 2018. The Immersion Application process is now open for students with information and application forms available on the Year 10 Religious Education Connect page. Please have a chat with your son about applying for one of the immersion experiences.

During the month of October the Church honours Mary as the Mother of the Rosary. It is the nature of human history that everything old becomes new again – one of the current trends in self-development is mindfulness meditation. This form of meditation practice seeks to still our racing minds in order to focus on the reality of being. The Church’s tradition of the Rosary, is an ancient practice that seeks exactly the same outcome. The one difference in the practice is that the Rosary reminds us that we cannot achieve anything by ourselves, the mantra of the prayers calls on Mary as the Mother of the Church to help us on our journey towards our God of love. The Rosary is a reminder that the reality of being, is being in the presence of God, a God whose constant message to us is one of love.

This week in Identity:

  • Friday prayer in the Chapel at 8:00am, all are welcome.
  • Paddies’ Van Ministries begin again next week
  • Year 10 students are invited to apply for Immersion experiences in 2018
  • Year 11 Leadership Retreat next week
  • Preparation for the India Immersion 2017
  • Paddies’ Van cooking a BBQ at Sacred Heart Sandgate on Friday 13 October

I hope all our St Patrick’s College families had the chance to spend time some quality time together over the school holidays. I have spoken to many of the students across the course of Week 1 and it is great to see that they have returned with smiles on their faces and the energy to attack the Term 4.

I have spoken to many of the students across the course of Week 1 and it is great to see that they have returned with smiles on their faces and the energy to attack the Term 4.

With holidays coming to an end once again the necessary Week 1 conversations need to occur. Does your son have the required equipment to get him through the term? Is his hair cut appropriate? Does he have his College hat ready for the hat check? What holiday habits has he developed that will need to be addressed across the first week?

Can I challenge all St Patrick’s parents to take your son through his College bag to assess his organisation and readiness. Please ask him to show you his books for each subject, his calculator and his pencil case. Can I also ask you to read over the St Patrick’s hair policy below to ensure that his haircut is appropriate.

St Patrick’s Hair Policy

Hair should be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times. This istheunderlying regulation regarding hair at St Patrick's College.

The following specific regulations must be adhered to so as to ensure the above statement ismaintained:

  • Hairstyles which draw attention to the student will not be permitted. This includes 'afro'hairstyles, buzz cuts, dreadlocks, mullet, undercuts, bowl cuts, tracks, tails, etc. and these are notacceptable in any form.
  • If hair is coloured itmust be one of these natural colours-blonde,brown, black or red -and 'regrowth'mustbeattendedto.Streaks/tipsarenotpermitted.
  • Hair must be clean and combed on a regular basis.
  • Hair should not be overly styled by the use of hair products.
  • Boys must be clean shaven and sideburns no longer than to mid-ear.

  • Morning Tea – All students are asked to bring a plate of food to share with the community on Monday and Tuesday. We ask that each Year 11 students takes the time to cook or prepare this plate of food themselves.

Students Driving to School

I would like to take this opportunity to remind our community about the College’s expectations regarding students driving to and from school. Having obtained permission from the Dean of Students to drive, it is important the student is clear about the conditions upon which this permission has been granted.

CONDITIONS

  1. Students are not to take passengers unless written permission has been sought from both the College and the passenger’s parents.
  2. Students are not to use the car during the course of the school day.
  3. Students are to place their keys with their House Dean each morning.
  4. Students are expected to drive in a sensible manner, always mindful of their safety and others. These guidelines are for the safety of all students at St Patrick's College. Failure to abide by these guidelines will necessitate the cancellation of the permission to drive until further notice. I hope all our families have a great Term 4 and please don’t hesitate in calling your son’s House Dean or myself if you have any concerns or issues.

Student Achievements

Lachlan Connors, as reported last term, was named in the Australian Schoolboy Rugby Team. This week he is competing in the Tri-nations Schoolboy Rugby Carnival against New Zealand Schools and Fiji Under 18 in Sydney. An Australian Barbarians team is also competing. The Australian team will play New Zealand Schools this Saturday afternoon. We understand that the game will be televised by Foxtel sports.
