From the College Principal

I am writing this report from Melbourne where I am attending the EREA Congress with Tim Kenny, Janet Garside and Jackie Upton. The purpose of the 2018 Congress is to gather representatives from EREA communities across Australia and give them an opportunity to:

• engage in dialogue about the experiences of EREA since the last Congress (2013);
• identify and celebrate the significant areas of growth and transformation within EREA;
• vision the new horizons for EREA within the context of the broader Australian Church.

I am writing this report from Melbourne where I am attending the EREA Congress with Tim Kenny, Janet Garside and Jackie Upton. The purpose of the 2018 Congress is to gather representatives from EREA communities across Australia and give them an opportunity to:

• engage in dialogue about the experiences of EREA since the last Congress (2013);
• identify and celebrate the significant areas of growth and transformation within EREA;
• vision the new horizons for EREA within the context of the broader Australian Church.

The Congress finished on Sunday afternoon. Over the time there were many interesting sessions based around the Charter Touchstones and facilitated by many external expert commentators. The information gathered from these sessions will allow EREA to set its priorities into the future.

Next week, our College has the great pleasure of hosting Mr Nigel D’Souza (St Patrick’s High School, Asansol) and Mr Ravi Victor (St Vincent’s High School, Asansol). Both principal’s will be with us for the week and will take the opportunity to meet with many of our staff and students as well as visit other EREA schools and some of Brisbane’s landmarks. We will welcome them with a special assembly on Tuesday.

We received the student NAPLAN reports yesterday morning. We are currently pursuing the student and cohort results to look for information and trends over time that will assist us to learn and make any necessary adjustments to our programs etc. The reports will be forwarded as soon as possible.

During last Tuesday’s assembly, we recognised the great work done by so many of our staff and students within the cultural dimension of the College. It was wonderful to see so many young men be recognised for their talents and contribution to the life of the College. It also underlined how fortunate we are to have so many staff who are talented teachers, coaches, conductors and performers and are prepared to offer much of their time to give our young men quality coaching and performing or competition opportunities.

Our Year 12 students undertook the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test last Tuesday and Wednesday. The tests are significant to students who wish to receive an Overall Position (OP) Score to be able to gain entry into further tertiary study. They are used to rank schools and scale student results. There are four tests that span across both days. They are quite taxing, and I would like to congratulate each young man for his efforts in the preparation sessions over the year as well as on the days of the tests. They certainly appeared to work to the best of their abilities.

Last Saturday morning, our Chemical Titration Team competed in the National finals at the University of Queensland. The team performed excellently with Harry Lawrence, Nicolas Easey and Lewis Huxtable being awarded gold medals and the team coming fourth overall in Queensland. We have yet to receive the overall national results.

I recently received an email concerning Chris Stackpoole. Chris completed his senior studies in 2007 and chose a career in law. Chris had been awarded a Merton College Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University in 2017/2018. He recently completed the course as Dux and was awarded the Vinerian Scholar 2018. Whilst in Oxford, he was also awarded a scholarship to study Private International Law at The Hague Academy of International Law in August 2018. Before this success, Chris had completed a double degree in Law and Business at QUT, been awarded Dux of the course. He was awarded Tom Cain Award and the Prime Minister's Australasian Scholarship allowing him to study at Jiang Tao University in Shanghai and then at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Chris had also been a Rhodes Scholarship finalist twice as well. Chris has just returned to Brisbane and we will hopefully be able to have him attend our Scholar’s Assembly at the beginning of next year. He is a wonderful example of a humble young man who worked hard at school and further extended himself when challenged at university. Chris was also involved in many service programs whilst at the College. It is always great to hear about what many of our young men achieve after they have left our gates.

Our senior students commence their block exams this Wednesday. It is most important that they are preparing for this assessment especially so soon after the QCS tests.

Last Thursday night our First XI Football team played against Kimberley College in the Uhlsport Cup final. Whilst our young men played as well as they could, Kimberley were a very good team and won the match 2-0. It has been a great effort to win their way through to the final and I congratulate all the players and coaching staff on a fine performance.

On Saturday we played our second last round of sporting fixtures against Iona College. Our junior teams played away, whilst our senior teams hosted Iona at home. Overall, we had some excellent competition against St Edmund’s College last weekend.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes - College Principal

This week out Year 12 students completed their QCS exams, they certainly have been working hard throughout the year and witnessed good steady improvement across the four types of papers. It is a short break with assessment beginning next week for Year 12 students. All students should be working hard over the next few weeks as they begin and complete assessment. Good luck to all.

College Coin “ALERT ALERT ALERT”

The cashless operation of the College has been very successful and both students and parent have embraced the change. Please be advised that from the beginning of Term 4 Student will no longer be able to load cash onto their Student cards at the College. This must only be completed online.

SCHOOL TRAFFIC

It is also timely that I remind all families regarding traffic movement around the College. The College is a busy place with large volumes of traffic occurring around the College during drop off and pick up. The safety of all students is paramount, if we can follow a few simple rules:

  • No double parking
  • No dropping off and picking up in driveways or bus zones (Pier Avenue and Yundah Street)
  • Use the two-minute pick up and drop off area on Park Parade
  • No access to Twamley street to drop off students
  • 40 km speed limit

Several parents have been booked by the Queensland Police and BCC parking and traffic officers over the past few weeks.

STUDENT RECORDS

On occasion when it is necessary for staff to communicate to parents for a variety of reason it is often impeded by disconnected phone numbers or outdated information.I would request that you please check that all address and parent contact details are correct. This can be completed firstly through Parent Lounge.

Finally a reminder that at the end of the term all classes will conclude at 3:00pm.

Year 11 and 12 Exam Block

Year 11 and 12 Exam Block

Students in Year 11 and 12 are getting close to their end of term exam block and should be well into their intensive revision processes. A reminder that all students should have their exam preparations mapped out in their student diary, as well as the exam times. I would encourage students in these year levels to use the exam block effectively for revision and study, and not for casual work and social events. A good habit is to come to school in uniform, for most of the day when there is an exam on, and use the library space for quiet supervised study or peer group study.

A reminder to Year 11 and 12 students who are eligible for extra time, please arrive at your exam venue at 8:30am for the morning session and 11:30am for the afternoon session, to access your extra time arrangements. Students without extra time will start their exams by 9:00am and 12:00noon for the morning and afternoon session respectively.

QCS Completed!

129 of our Year 12 students completed the Queensland Core Skills test over Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Their effort and focus was exceptional for the duration of the four tests. By no means are the tests anything apart from challenging, and after the group left the first day feeling positive and that it was a fairly easy day, I knew that Day 2 would be challenging. It certainly was however my observation was that the group couldn’t have done anything else as their diligence and conduct over the two days, especially during the tough second day, and for the vast majority of the long preparation program, was excellent. There is nothing else to do now in terms of the QCS test other than wait for results in December. In terms of finishing well, there is still much assessment and learning to occur as we work towards graduation in November. Can I quash any rumours that Term 4 does not contribute towards their result – rather in many cases Term 4 can be critical in placing students on a level of achievement for their senior statement.

Year 11 students will start their QCS preparation (the last ever group that will complete the test) during Term 4.

This week I share the final section of the Mentoring Program whole school data collection, namely our boys’ study habits and routines:

If you have attended any of the Subject Selection Evenings this term, you will have heard Mr Troy Schultz, Dean of Teaching and Learning, talk about how if you are in Year 8 you should be doing approximately eight hours of study per week, if Year 9, nine hours, if Year 10, ten hours etc.Having recently participated in the Year 10 SET Plan interview process, I was given a real insight into our boys’ study habits.These SET Plan interviews are a wonderful opportunity to talk to the boys one on one about their hopes and aspirations for their futures.We also discuss what habits they currently have in place (or not!) to achieve these goals.Boys are very honest about the amount of work they are doing, how much social media such as Snapchat is interfering with their study and how gaming can be a real source of distraction for some.We want our boys to have a balanced approach to their lives; time with mates, sporting pursuits, time with family and loved ones etc but this balance should include a genuine commitment to their study, if they hope to achieve semester targets and longer-term goals.

Subject Selections for 2019

All subject selections are now closed.Once I have built the Year 9, 10 and 11 (2019) grids, I will communicate to both students and parents the (elective) subjects that students have been enrolled in.This will occur by the start of Term 4 so please check your emails for this communication.

Students are reminded to thank their team coaches and officials at the conclusion of this week’s games for all the time and effort taken to give St Patrick’s students the opportunity to participate in sport. Team captains are requested to put plans in place to organise a thank you to coaches at the end of the season.

The first Track and Field AIC meet was held at UQ on Friday. This meet is mainly for junior athletes. Tennis and Basketball participants are not required as they have season commitments to fulfil. Next Friday 15 September is the first whole College meet at QSAC. Year 5 and 6 Basketball players do not attend this meet. A bus will transport the students to and from the College. Students are required to sign on for the bus in the gym each week. Students attending these meets are required to wear the appropriate uniform. Met North Track and Field Championships Review – Jake Jennings, Track and Field Coordinator

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Kate Colohan, Dan Nethery, Doug Locke and all Track and Field Coaches to congratulate the St Patrick’s competitors for their achievements at the recent Met North Track and Field Championships. The championships were held over three days at University of Queensland with the first day dedicated to junior athletes and featuring our young men selected in the Bramble Bay squad up against other 12 year old’s from St Patrick’s and the district. Days two and three featured a great mix of senior athlete competition as well as a scattering of finals for the junior events. All athletes from St Patrick’s exhibited great competitiveness and it pleases me to say that this year was very successful. A lot of hard work has been put into the planning of this track and field season and results like these are a testament to the great work being done by our St Patrick’s coaches and our dedicated athletes.

The Met North team to compete at States just prior to AIC Champs has not yet been announced but we anticipate up to 15 St Patrick’s boys have been selected which is an outstanding achievement.

Below I have compiled a list of our placegetters from the championships with special mention of some new St Patrick’s records.

  • 12 years Long Jump – Cooper Wellman 1st place
  • 12 years Multi-Event – Cooper Wellman 1st place
  • 12 years Discus – Eli Avci 1st place and new 12 years SPC record of 35.78m
  • 12 years Shot Put – Eli Avci 1st place
  • 13 years 200m – Thomas Enever 2nd place
  • 14 years Shot Put – Samuel Waugh 1st place
  • 14 years Discus – Samuel Waugh 2nd place
  • 15 years 100m – Ethan Ryan 3rd place

Theatresports uses most of the 21st Century Skills: communication; critical thinking; creative thinking; collaboration and teamwork; personal and social skills - and the boys displayed them at an exceptional level.

And they were entertaining!

Impressively though as soon as they heard that they missed out on a place in the Grand Final they all moved to shake the hands of all the other teams and wish them well. Then they took themselves off to a room away from others and moved into a huddle and talked about next year’s event and trying again. Great sportsmanship from a group who possess the amazing lost art of PLAY and big hearts.

It has been a privilege to walk beside them.

These are great opportunities to learn more about this amazing, wonderful, crazy, challenging and exciting ride that is raising this generation of young people.

At each event you’ll also get to connect with other parents on a similar journey to yours. Importantly, your attendance also lets your kids know, in a really tangible way, that you are there for them. You are welcome to bring along a friend or two or more. Both of these events are open to parents and friends within and beyond Mary MacKillop College.

There is no cover charge.

Mary MacKillop College – in partnership with parents and families.

Looking forward to seeing you at these great events.
