From the College Principal

Last Sunday’s Gospel reading came from Mark and was about the parable of the mustard seed. In this parable Jesus was trying to explain the notion of the Kingdom of Heaven. The passage states…

Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its...

Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” (Mk 4:26-34)

Our faith aspires to build the Kingdom in all communities that we are in. A bigger picture view of the response is one of Christianity in general. Our faith (on earth) started from the birth of Christ; a single person. Over time, it has grown into a belief that directs the life and actions of so many people. The shade of the mustard tree (our faith) protects us and allows us to spread the good news to others.

Within our own school community. The Gospel values centred on the life of Jesus Christ “shade” each of us. If we grow from these values we will create our own “kingdom” that respects the dignity of each and reflects justice, love and peace for all. There will always be occasions when these values are tested by our young men or even adults within our community. However, if we are faithful to our College Catholic identity, these bigger picture values are our priority and set our direction. This can sometimes be lost within the everyday expectations that come with teaching and learning. Good Catholic schools need to balance being good schools but not at the expense of their Catholic identity. This can cause tensions at times, but this identity is what creates our “Kingdom” and the shade for our community members.

Our young men completed their last day of Term 2 today. Over the past week, they have been undertaking various forms of assessment which will allow us to make informed judgements about how they are currently progressing at this point in time within each of their subjects. The assessment feedback and student reporting is important information to both students and teachers. Each young man should review his individual assessment results and overall semester result with interest and compare it with the target that he had set for himself. The feedback from each individual piece of assessment completed over the semester will give him some knowledge about where his strengths and challenges may lie. Many of our students can fall into the trap of simply looking at their overall result and try to make some generalised assumptions about what they may need to do to further improve within their subjects. A more thorough way of doing this is to look at each assessment piece and the criteria results and teacher comments throughout the assignment or test. They should be looking for common threads amongst these criteria results or comments. This is a time consuming practice, but is a very useful way to reflect upon the semester’s work and ways to further improve.

The other significant piece of feedback will come from the parent, student and teacher interviews conducted in the second week of next term. As the time is short in these interviews, it is best to come with some questions already for the teacher rather than discuss past assessment pieces. The interviews should be more future focussed and concentrate more on targets for the semester and actions to be undertaken to try and achieve the targets.

Next week, our teaching staff will be at the College completing marking and reporting, and undertaking a series of professional development workshops around our Pedagogical Framework, The Art and Science of Teaching. We will also spend a full day working on report data to consider what it is telling us about out teaching practices and to assess some programs or practices that were introduced across a range of subjects and year levels. We will also work on whole school initiatives and expectations around student well-being and behaviour formation. This week is an invaluable week for teaching staff to participate in prolonged and relevant professional development as opposed to student free days at the beginning of each term.

During today’s assembly, we farewelled three current staff members. Firstly, Mrs Melanie McNamara will complete her contract. Melanie joined us to replace Mr Clinton Hall after his accident some weeks ago. Mr Bernie Haughey will take the whole second semester off for long service leave and Mr John Tucker will be away for Term 3 on long service leave. Mr Phil McGreevy will replace Mr Haughey and Mr Mike Bramwell will replace Mr Tucker during their terms of absence.

During the holidays, clinics will be held for several sports and our Confraternity team will travel to Charters Towers for the Confraternity Rugby League carnival. There are also many students and staff involved in the Queensland and Australian Schoolboys Rugby trials and championships. I would like to thank the many staff who have made themselves available during this time to allow our young men to enjoy the opportunities they have been given.

I hope that each of our young men can have a restful and enjoyable break from school during the holiday period. I appreciate that many parents will be working over this period and I hope that your son(s) is helpful and supportive to you during his break and that you get to enjoy some good quality time together.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

12. Avoiding online spam, scams and phishing

13. Safe use of location-based services

If you missed any of these articles please go back over previous issues of the Calling. The eSafety Commissioner is a great source of information and I encourage all our families to access any material from this organisation. Once again please be mindful that these articles often use hyperlinks to allow parents to access support material. This week we look at ways to help protect your child against online spam and scams and safe use of local-based services.

12. Avoiding online spam, scams and phishing

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

The online world provides you and your child with incredible access to communications and information. However, there are also a number of things that you must be aware of to avoid being taken advantage of.

  • Scamsare ways of obtaining information or money through false means.
  • Spam is an unsolicited commercial electronic message.
  • Phishing is the use of email or SMS to encourage individuals to reveal financial details like credit card numbers, account names and passwords or other personal information. Phishing messages can look like genuine messages from a real bank, telecommunications provider, online retailer or credit card company.

Discuss these actions with your child to avoid this illegal activity.

  • Avoid giving out personal information like your email address or mobile phone number publicly. Check the terms and conditions of anything you sign up for. You may be consenting to receive commercial messages.
  • Do not accept friend requests or respond to text messages from people you don’t know.
  • Remember that banking institutions will never contact customers by email seeking specific account details. Call your bank
  • Ensure that you only disclose financial information on websites that you trust and that have secure payment facilities. Look for a URL that begins with ‘https’ and padlock symbols once you get to the payment page to check it is likely to be secure.

If your child has been affected by spam, scams or phishing, they can report scams here, as well as visiting the esafety website.

13. Safe use of location-based services

Portable communication and entertainment technology has evolved with many devices now connected to the internet and using new features to deliver customised content and functionality.

Some smartphones, cameras, tablets and other small devices have a built-in feature called a geolocator that can pinpoint your exact location. This data is often published online through social networking sites, or used by location-based services such

as maps, public transport apps, retail services and so on. It can also be embedded in images you take with your smartphone camera.

You can support your child’s safe use of location-based services by:

  • Making sure that their location is only visible to friends they know in the real world. Check that the social networking site doesn’t also show their details to those nearby who they might not know.
  • Checking their privacy settings so that if they do share location information, it’s only going to the people they want to see it. If they are in doubt, they shouldn’t check in.
  • Customising their location-based services so that only particular applications can access location information.
  • Switching offlocation-based services and GPS when they are not using them. Most devices and applications allow you to switch location information on and off as needed.
  • Encouraging them to contact the police if they feel like they are in physical danger or are unsafe.

If you, your child or someone you know wants to know more about location-based services, visit esafety.gov.au.

Trimester 3 sport consists of Basketball, Tennis, Cross Country and Track and Field. Students and parents should regularly check the REALM sports specific pages for up to date information on trials and preseason activities.

As previously communicated, St Patrick’s will not be able to cater for all students who have signed on for Basketball. Most AIC competitions will only accommodate four teams per College. This will be disappointing for the Basketball players who missed out on selection. Parents are asked to be positive with their sons and help us develop resilience in the young men on this possible bad news. Parents are asked not to purchase uniforms until students are confirmed in teams. At the trial on 21 July students will be permitted to play in HPE shirts.

Good luck to our Confraternity Rugby League team and officials who will compete in Division One from 1–6 July in Charters Towers. Also to our Basketball teams competing at the EREA (Edmund Rice Education Australia) tournament held at St James in Fortitude Valley over the holiday break.

The Cross Country coaches have scheduled holiday training for all age groups. All students are welcome to attend the holiday training sessions. The sessions times and venues have been posted on REALM.

The Sport Support Group are calling for expressions of interest in the paid role of Canteen Convenor for Curlew Park and Christian Brothers Building canteen. Our long time Convenor Mr David Row has retired and we are now searching for his replacement. For further details please contact Mr Liam Casey, Business Manager, on lcasey@stpatricks.qld.edu.au.

David provided many years of service to the College and it was our pleasure to have David and his wife Christine as our guests for the day. Mr Mayes also announced a new service award this year, the David Row Award, to recognise the volunteer efforts of a parent during the year.

The day would not have been possible without our wonderful sponsors and raffle prize donors.

Last year we had a director come in to work with the senior Drama students for their production. This year we were very proud to work with talented composer and conductor Paul Jarman. Paul gave workshops for the Year 9 – 12 Music classes and rehearsed with all three of the College choirs. It was a treat for some of the Year 5 woodwind and brass students to also hear him demonstrate his flair for and knowledge of some lesser-known wind instruments. While Paul has now returned to his home in Valla, near Coffs Harbour, his work with us is not finished. We have commissioned him to write a new choir piece for our College and we can’t wait to hear this new composition. To research for the new piece, Paul spent time with the students working on the Paddy’s Van, and was also lucky enough to hear the entire College sing “The Call” at Assembly. I’m sure this will give him ample inspiration for the original composition.

Celebration of the Arts

Congratulations to the 150 Year 8 students who participated in the second Celebration of the Arts event last Thursday evening. Students had been working hard in their Visual Art, Music and Drama classes to present their final performances to a very appreciative audience. After they all enjoyed a yummy pizza dinner, the evening started on the historic Shorncliffe Pier and included circus items, junk percussion performances and hand-made lantern displays. Soon it was time to move up for the floating ceremony where the Art students floated their lanterns on the pool to make a beautiful effect. The final part of the evening was a formal performance in the Christian Brothers Building where all classes were able to display their skills once again. Many thanks to teachers Mr Lester, Mr Royes, Mr Vanni, Miss Matthew and Mr McNally for their efforts during the term to help the students display their entertaining skills. Thanks also to the other Creative Arts teachers who assisted in the evening.
