From the College Principal

This week, I have been in Adelaide participating in the EREA Principal’s Conference for the latter part of this week. I always find these conferences to be very stimulating through the activities and workshops that we participate in, but more importantly catching up and networking with College Principals from all round Australia and New Zealand. It is a great time to learn from each other and share good practice. Interestingly, there is a common theme that seems to be emerging from all schools. That is, that they are becoming increasingly more complex and busy places. However, the contemporary research on teaching and learning and associated resources is also more accessible and shared than ever before. Whilst we might be from different states and cities, we all share the same mission of providing a quality wholistic education within a safe and inclusive environment to each young man within our schools. The complexity of the modern school centres on improved knowledge of each young man in our classes and how to best engage him in learning as well as the other students within the class. Conferences such as these allow each of us who attend to learn how we can further enhance how we do this by listening to and asking questions of others. That is one of the great strengths of being within a network of schools such as EREA.

Last Saturday was the last round of Chess, Football and Rugby fixtures. Overall, our aggregate points placed us in 3rd position for Chess, 4th position for Rugby and 5th position for Football. Our Senior A Chess team won a premiership, our First XV won a premiership and the 2nd and 3rd Football teams also won their respective premierships. I would particularly point out the First XV team. This is the first time in our 66 year history that we have won a First XV Rugby premiership. We are very proud of this achievement and the players and coaching staff certainly worked hard throughout the season.

I also believe that this was a successful season not just because of the premierships, but more importantly, we had a record number of young men get involved in all three activities. Each week, I watched so many of them enjoy themselves and make the most of the opportunity to play with their mates from school. It was also a year when we had fewer instances of poor behaviour from our College on or off the field. Each of our young men certainly appeared to try hard to reach our own high standards of sportsmanship and fair play. I would also like to thank the many parents who attended the games and role-modelled our expectations of the students and for all your support and assistance especially at Curlew Park. Finally, my sincerest thanks to all the coaches and managers. Our staff are always so very generous with their time for the young men and there were also so many old boys and parents who also lead busy lives but found some time to assist the young men to be able to have such opportunities. Thank you each and all, your time and efforts are certainly acknowledged and appreciated.

The exam period is now under way. It is time for the students to cut back on other endeavours and concentrate on preparation for the exams. In reality, some may not have the drive or ability to make this move on their own and might require a little support and assistance to plan and prepare for the exams. I appreciate that this can be draining as a parent, but it can be very helpful to your son. I have always believed in the statement that it is difficult to live up to expectations if you do not know what the expectations are. Some young men may need to have these expectations discussed with them leading into next week.

Mr Troy Schultz will forward a communication to all families regarding the new format of the end of semester reports and how to access them and the date that they will be available. At the beginning of the semester, our students in the middle and senior grades set themselves target results for the semester. The first term provided an opportunity to see how they were going in keeping on track for the targets. This report will be an opportunity for the young men to measure themselves against what they had hoped to achieve. The report will provide an opportunity to sit with them and review whether they achieved their target and reset a new one for the second semester. The most significant learning from target setting for our young men is the conversation with others about how they achieved the targets and what went wrong if they missed them. This information can then be used in the discussion around setting a new target. To be effective, student reporting needs a phase of reflection after the results are published with honest discussion around how to grow further and improve. Also, to learn from what worked or did not during the last term. Conversations with parents and teachers (Parent Teacher Interviews) are a significant part of this reflection process.

On Sunday, the Sports Support Group are hosting the Long Table Lunch. This is the first time that they have attempted such an event and I know that a lot of planning has gone into it. I look forward to joining in the fun and catching up with many families over lunch.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes – College Principal

Intensive Revision

The term is not slowing down as we approach the exam-heavy conclusion of Semester 1. I recently spoke to the student body around the importance of intensive revision. The term is not slowing down as we approach the exam-heavy conclusion of Semester 1. I recently spoke to the student body around the importance of intensive revision. This type of home practice involves diligent review of the content that will be assessed in subject examinations. I showed the students an example of student diaries where this intensive revision process had been mapped out.

For parents – I give you permission to use one of my golden rules.

RULE: What grade are you in? You need to start your intensive revision this many days out from an upcoming exam.

So a student in Year 8, should start their revision for an exam eight days out. This requires some planning, as exam times are staggered over several days and hence start times for revision are also. If students have their exams written in their diary, then they can allocate time periods for study each night back from there, for the days required for their grade level.

I will continue to push these messages to students and hope that parents can use them as well. Consistent messages will help us to work effectively in partnership.

Mr Troy Schultz – Dean of Teaching and Learning

Staying Safe Online

Across Term 2 the St Patrick’s College Wellbeing Team is running a series of newsletter articles from the eSafety Commissioner. The purpose of these articles is to educate our parent community on how they can best assist their son in avoiding the pitfalls of social media. Please be mindful that these articles often use hyperlinks to allow parents to access support material. This week we look at ways to help protect your child against online identity theft and trolling. I hope you and your family have been benefiting from these weekly articles.

10. Protecting your child against online identity theft

As your child grows up they develop responsibility to access services such as a library membership, bank accounts and a mobile phone. This includes managing the use of PINS and passwords to ensure that personal information is safe and only revealed to appropriate people and organisations.

Identity theft is when your child’s personal information is used without their knowledge or permission. Personal information can be accessed from their online accounts and with sufficient information, criminals can transfer money directly from bank accounts or impersonate your child online on social networking sites.

Your child can reduce the chance of identity theft by:

  • Using secure websites for shopping and online banking. Look for the padlock symbol, a URL that begins with ‘https’ and correct spelling and logos.
  • Monitoring their content. If their profile has been hacked, shut it down immediately. Some sites also allow you to set up notifications when your account is logged in from an unregistered device.
  • Changing their passwords regularly. Passwords should never be shared, should be changed frequently and be a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Not getting phished. Ensure your child doesn’t respond to calls or emails from ‘banks’ asking for pin numbers and passwords. If they are concerned it is not the real bank, hang up and call back their publicly listed number. If an email from a bank/credit card asks you to click on a link chances are, it’s a scam.
  • Reporting it. If your child thinks that they have had their personal details stolen or used without their knowledge, they should talk to their bank or other related institution.
  • Ignoring the troll—responding to nasty, immature and offensive comments only gives trolls the attention they want.
  • Blocking the troll—taking away their power. If they pop up under a different name block or mute them again.
  • Reporting trolls—reporting to site administrators. If they pop up under a different name, report them to site administrators again. If you feel your safety is being threatened, contact the police for further advice. You may consider not using the site until the issue is resolved or the troll has become bored.

If you, your child or someone you know wants to know more about identity theft, visit esafety.gov.au or contact the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 or eheadspace on 1800 650 890.

11. Trolling online – what it is and how to support your child

Trolling is when a user intentionally causes distress, anger and argument in an online public forum for the purpose of disturbing other users.

Individuals who partake in trolling seek an emotional response from others, whether with malicious or humorous intent. Responding to trolling comments can result in the activity escalating.

Your children may experience trolling on social networking sites, online gaming, chat rooms or blogs. Watch the “Chatterbox” episode about trolling, tagging and bagging.

Children can protect themselves by taking the following action:

  • Ignoring the troll—responding to nasty, immature and offensive comments only gives trolls the attention they want.
  • Blocking the troll—taking away their power. If they pop up under a different name block or mute them again.
  • Reporting trolls—reporting to site administrators. If they pop up under a different name, report them to site administrators again. If you feel your safety is being threatened, contact the police for further advice. You may consider not using the site until the issue is resolved or the troll has become bored.
  • Talkingwith friends and family—if a troll has upset your child, it helps to talk about it with friends and family. You or your child can visit esafety.gov.au or call to the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 or eheadspace on 1800 650 890.
  • Protecting friends from trolls—if trolls are upsetting your child’s friend tell them to Ignore, Block, Report. Tell their family and other friends and encourage them to seek support.

Learn more about trolls and online hate on the eSafety website.

Well done to Luke Oxford, Josh Neilsen, Brian Polich and Steve Lawrence and the squad for achieving this milestone.

St Patrick’s have had a successful season as indicated by the following results:

  • AIC Premiership: 1st XV Rugby, 2nd Football, 3rd XI Football
  • 2nd Place: 1st XI Football, 5th XI Football, 7C Football
  • 3rd Place: 10B Rugby, 3rd XV Rugby, 4th XV Rugby, 4th’s Football

Our congratulations to Mr David Ludlow, Football Coordinator and Mr Dan Nethery, Rugby Coordinator, in planning, organising and implementing strong, structured programs over the last ten weeks. Special mention to all coaches who trained and mentored the students in all the teams over the last ten weeks. Thanks also to the parents who supported their son’s in purchasing gear, helping the students attend training and games and being a positive support throughout the season. And lastly a job well done to the tireless Curlew Park crew who arrive at 5:30am every Saturday and are still packing up as the last of the players depart each week. To Geoff Paulsen and his team, thank you!

To the many parent helpers in the canteen throughout the day, thank you. To the Sport Support Group Canteen Coordinator Mr David Row well done on another great winter season! As reported earlier David has now retired from his St Patrick’s community work, going strong since 2004.

The Co-curricular Awards Ceremony for Football and Rugby will be held on Tuesday 31st July. Award winners will be contacted via mail early next term.

The Cross Country program has been in action for a number of months and students are ready to compete at AIC meets. Forty-eight students will be attending the annual Training Camp next weekend. The venue this year will be at Perigian Springs with camp activities centred around the Noosa and Coolum district. Mr Alec Gold, Head Coach, has organised training sessions during the holidays. All students are welcome to attend the sessions. Information will be available REALM. After the holidays Friday afternoon and Saturday morning meets will fine tune our runners in preparation for the AIC Championships to be held on 8 August.

Brother Chris Pritchard in conjunction with Professional Tennis Coach Mr Brad Harbottle have commenced trials and training at the Morven and Deagon courts. Details have been communicated via email to all signed up students.

Basketball sign on was a huge success, with over 450 students expressing an interest to play. Unfortunately, our training facilities can only cater for A-E teams in each year level. The trial process has already begun and will continue throughout the holidays and week one of Term 3. Students who signed on and parents are asked to check REALM for details. Some teams are having holiday sessions to extend the preseason.

Outstanding Student Achievements

Congratulations to Manaaki Bateman who on Wednesday was selected to represent Metropolitan North at the State U12 Rugby Championships to be held in Cairns in early August.

Well done to U12 Metropolitan North Basketball representatives Charlie Schiffer and LeBron Brooks (Captain) on winning the State Carnival recently held in Cairns. The Met North Team only lost 1 out of their 9 games so guaranteed them a spot in the final. The team battled through a tough gold medal match against the host team Peninsula (Cairns). With 20 seconds to go LeBron hit a 3 pointer to tie the match at 50 all. Carnival rules dictated no overtime to be played so both Met North and Peninsula were awarded Gold medal winners! LeBron was selected as a member of the Queensland Basketball Team and will represent Queensland at the upcoming National Championships in Darwin.

Vale Br Vic Larkin

Br Vic Larkin was our first Campus Minister at St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe, 1995–1997, besides having a soft spot for the College during his years as Deputy Provincial, 1978–1989.

Br Vic Larkin (1929-2018) passed away late Friday evening. He was indeed a wonderful man and an exceptional Christian Brother who was able to re-contextualise himself and his vocation across his various ministries and decades of his life in ways where he was deeply appreciated, valued and contemporary. He will be sadly missed as he meant much to many.

He was indeed a wonderful man and an exceptional Christian Brother who was able to re-contextualise himself and his vocation across his various ministries and decades of his life in ways where he was deeply appreciated, valued and contemporary. He will be sadly missed as he meant much to many.

All of this was captured in a beautiful liturgy that was hosted by David Johnston (Acting Principal) and Steven Meara (Dean of Mission) at Nudgee College first up this Monday morning. Below is an excerpt to the introduction of the liturgy that took place under brilliant sunshine on the steps of Wilkes Oval where the immediate and extended community of parents, Brothers and Old Boys gathered in great numbers in celebration of one of God’s gentle giants.

Br Vic Larkin 1929 - 2018

We remember Br Vic as a:

  • Terrace Old Boy
  • Christian Brother
  • Teacher
  • Mentor
  • Friend

What we remember most is a man of faith. A man convinced of God’s love for him; he committed his life to the service of that God: A life poured out for the God who loved him.

A life lived in the footsteps of Edmund: Presence - Compassion – Liberation.

A giant of a man but above all a gentleman, strong, loving, forgiving - when he looked at you, you sensed he looked into your heart and knew you better than many others could or ever will.

Today we celebrate:

A life given fully to God

A man of faith

Our Brother, Vic.

May he now rest in peace.
