On Sunday, we celebrated two wonderful events. Firstly, we took time to thank our mothers for what they have done for each of us. I hope that every mother within our community had a wonderful day and was made to feel very special by your children.

The second event was the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. This also marked the end of the Easter season with our faith. The ascension marks Jesus’s final words on earth before he ascends into heaven. These words to his disciples were to go out to all in the world and proclaim the good news. This started the process of the disciples travelling and preaching this good news and, in turn, developing their own followers and numbers to the faith. In essence, the meaning of the ascension for us is that Jesus no longer has a physical presence (as person) in the world but has a spiritual presence through each of us. Our words and actions could be described as our own personal Gospel. This maybe the only Gospel that others may hear. Therefore, it is incumbent on each of us to make sure that our words and actions are gentle, selfless, patient and compassionate. St Teresa of Avila, a Spanish nun and saint, is the patron for the sick and the missions. Her prayer, Christ has No Body, best makes this point.

Christ Has No Body

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Teresa of Avila (1515–1582)

Tomorrow is a significant day on our co-curricular calendar. We host Marist College Ashgrove in our annual Back to Shorncliffe Day. This day is traditionally a special day of thanks to our Year 12 students in their last games at Curlew Park as well as a welcome back to the many SPC Old Boys who make this a special day on their calendars. Our First XI Football team and First XV Rugby teams will also wear special retro jerseys that represent the jerseys of the early years of competition. This year, the First XV will be given their jerseys by Mr Murray Schultz. Apart from being a past staff member and father of sons from St Patrick’s College, Murray was one of the original parents and Sports Support Group members who worked so hard to transform Curlew Park from an old dumpsite to what it is today. The First XI Football team will receive their special jerseys from Joe Champness. Joe is the brother of our current College captain, Daniel. He was also College Captain in 2014. Joe has since gone on to represent Australia in Football (U/23) and is currently a member of the Newcastle Jets team that narrowly lost to Sydney FC in the recent A League Grand Final. There will be a full day of fixtures at Curlew Park and I would like to publicly thank Marist College Ashgrove for allowing this to happen. At 10:00am, the College Leadership Team will also host the parents from our Year 12 students to morning tea. This will be the last Back to Shorncliffe Day and second last fixture at Curlew Park for many of them. I hope that this morning tea, in some small way, demonstrates the College’s appreciation for all the hard work that has been done by so many of you over your association with St Patrick’s. Once again this year, we will use the occasion to express our opposition to domestic violence and the DV police unit will have a presence at the grounds throughout the day. There will also be great live music from our young men and other displays. We are expecting a large crowd of people and look forward to an enjoyable day of sport and music.

During this week, almost all our students in Years 5, 7 and 9 completed their NAPLAN tests. As mentioned in me article last week, we use the data from these tests along with other tests and in-school results to look at individual student and cohort strengths and challenges. I was disappointed that some students did not attend without following the expected procedures. In the case of illness, we have been able to catch up with the tests for most of these students. I would encourage all parents who may have chosen to withdraw their son from the tests for other reasons to make contact Mr Troy Schultz. He will alert you to what data we receive and its use that is different from that sent to students and parents. This may allow some people to have a balanced informed view of the tests from our perspective.

I would also like to thank the many Year 12 students and parents who came to the QCS information night on Monday. During the meeting, Ms Elizabeth Gaber, Mr Troy Schultz and Mr David Crewe used our current data as evidence to demonstrate how we think the current cohort is progressing in their preparation. I hope that this information and explanation was very worthwhile to all who attended. I am also very happy to receive feedback about the presentation in ways that we can make it more relevant or useful in future years. The young men undertook an SRI Practice Test on Wednesday afternoon as well.

Congratulations to our Chemical Titration teams who competed against other schools at the UQ last Saturday. Once again, one of our teams has moved through into the State finals to be held later this year. The teams have been expertly prepared and trained by Mrs Lorraine O’Sullivan and Mrs Ashleigh Walker.

I look forward to catching up with many of you tomorrow at Curlew Park.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes – College Principal

Applications for special provisions for the 2018 QCS Test are now open. If your son has a medical condition, impairment or other circumstance that will make it difficult for him to sit the test on the same basis as other students, he may be able to apply for special provision.

How do I know if my son is eligible?

You should apply for special provision if he has:

  • A diagnosed medical condition or an impairment
  • Exceptional circumstances that prevent him from sitting the test

What help is available?

Before the test:

  • Special arrangements are adjustments to test conditions such as rest breaks, enlarged test papers, use of a computer and use of your medical equipment.
  • Exemption allows you to be absent from the test but remain eligible for an Overall Position (OP) and Field Positions (FP).

After the test:

  • Exemption allows you to remain OP/FP eligible if you were unavoidably absent from the test.
  • Declaring your test result null and void allows you to choose not to receive a test grade if your performance in the test was affected by an unavoidable circumstance such as an illness. You will remain eligible for OP/FPs.

If your son is currently receiving special provisions from the College regarding assessment because of special conditions outlined in the QCS Handbook, your son will be entitled to apply for special provision for the QCS Test. If there is additional documentation related to cognitive, physical or sensory impairment to support the application, with the College currently does not have, this documentation should be supplied to Mr Troy Schultz.

Application close 21 May for long-term illnesses or impairments such as diabetes, colour blindness or arthritis. Closing dates vary for short term illnesses, recently diagnosed conditions or exceptional circumstances.

For further information you can visit the website QCAA QCS Special Provision

Over the coming weeks the St Patrick’s College Wellbeing team will be running a series of newsletter articles from the eSafety Commissioner. The purpose of these articles is to educate our parent community on how they can best assist their son in avoiding the pitfalls of social media. Please be mindful that these articles often use hyperlinks to support material.

The topic covered last week was:

1. Cyberbullying – supporting your child online

This week we are looking at:

2. Supporting your child’s safe online social networking

3. Protecting your child’s digital reputation

Please take the time to look over the hyperlinks provided within the article.

Supporting your child’s safe online social networking

Social networking is an extension of offline friendships and we should treat people respectfully in the same way we do in real life. Chatting to friends using IM, chat or social networking is a great way to stay in touch and make new friends. However, your child should always keep in mind that there are some risks meeting people online—especially if they don’t know them in real life.

Discuss the following aspects with your child to help them safely enjoy social networking.

  • Limit your friend list. Do you know your online friends in the real world? If not, consider changing your settings to limit interaction with them or remove them.
  • Protect personal information. Restrict information that people can use to access your finances, and to identify where you live, work or go out.
  • Check on your images. Does everything about your life really need to be online? How might this affect you and your reputation in the future? Take a look at the eSafety website for some tips for taking photos and videos and sharing them online.
  • Stay respectful. Are your posts respectful to friends and others? This is real life; being online is no excuse for bad behaviour.
  • Think twice before meeting offline. If you want to meet someone offline it is essential totake an adult with you, meet in the daytime and in a public place. Don’t share personal information too early.
It is important to note that there may be age restrictions that apply to your child joining a social network. Many popular social networks are restricted to users above 13 years of age. Check out the infographic “Is there an age limit for kids on social media?”

If your child or someone they know wants to talk about challenging online friendships, call the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 or Headspace on 1800 650 890.

Protecting your child’s digital reputation

Children, especially during their teenage years, learn the importance of their reputation as a part of growing up.

Offline, a child’s reputation can be established through behaviour in the classroom and the playground, their treatment of friends, and academic, artistic or sporting achievements. Your child’s online reputation is defined by both the content they post about themselves and what others post about your child.

Tagged photos, blog posts and social networking interactions will all shape how your child is perceived online and offline. A poor digital reputation can affect friendships, relationships and future job prospects. Children can protect their digital reputation by:

  • Thinking before they post. Does everything about their life really need to be online? How might this affect them in the future?
  • Setting their profile to private and checking privacy settings regularly to make sure default options haven’t changed. This will allow them to control who sees what they post online. Visit the eSafety website for more information on how to protect your child’s privacy online. The eSafety website has a section on games, apps and social networking with step-by-step instructions to control your settings for each social networking platform.
  • Keeping an eye on photos tagged by friends. Even if your child’s profile is private, the content friends post might be available for the world to see. Some social media sites allow users to approve tags before they are attached to their profile.

If you or your child wants to learn more about digital reputation issues, you can visit the eSafety website.

It was a massive day last Saturday against St Laurence’s College. The students did themselves proud by moving around the different fields cheering on their school mates. Both 1st Football and Rugby teams continued their undefeated run. Our senior teams also are preforming very strongly recording victories.

This week is Back To Shorncliffe Day. A carnival atmosphere will prevail. Students and parents are reminded to ensure they arrive for their Yearbook photo: times of photos and games are on the Realm. Back To Shorncliffe Day is also a perfect opportunity for the younger players to remain at Curlew Park for the day and cheer on the older students. Don’t forget to pack formal uniform.

It was disappointing to be informed of a small part of the spectators at SLC becoming involved in negative ‘banter’ with supporters, match officials and players. St Patrick’s students are having the message reinforced weekly that whatever the others do, WE DON’T! Saturday sport is school sport and we need to keep this in perspective when supporting our young men. St Patrick’s spectators in season 2018 have been excellent. We look forward to a very competitive day on Back To Shorncliffe Day v Marist Ashgrove College.

Each Tuesday Mr Darren Kearney and I chair the Sports Judiciary with the Sport Coordinators and College 1st Captains also present. The judiciary is to challenge students who have been reported for unsportsmanlike conduct on or off the field during sport. Students are sent email communication requesting their attendance. On most occasions the student is issued a warning after having discussed the issues and formulating a positive plan to move forward. Unfortunately, we do have players suspended from playing because of their actions. A Red card in nearly every situation is an automatic one week suspension. Physical violence as per our St Patrick’s College Rules also carries suspension. Any student who is suspended from competition games will have email communication sent to the recorded family email address.

The Sport Support Group are very hopeful for a large response to their cry for assistance for this weekend. BBQ cooks and serving behind the counter duties are required for the entire day. Information regarding the distribution of funds from the canteen are always discussed at the regular month Sport Support Meeting held on the first Monday of the month. The next meeting is Monday 4 June. Everyone is welcome to come along and help support our sporting program. Thanks again to those parents who are able to help this Saturday. The aim is always for parents to assist during their sons warm up and leave once their game kicks off.

Sign on for Term 3 Basketball, Tennis and Track and Field commences late next week. Parents are requested to monitor their email. Full instructions on the sign on process will be sent. Year 5 and 6 Basketball is played after school on Friday afternoon. A college bus will transport the students to and from away games. Year 7-12 Basketball is played on Saturday mornings. All Tennis is played on Saturday mornings. All dates for fixtures can be located on the College calendar.

A reminder to the Year 7-12 runners. The Cross Country Sunshine Coast Camp on the weekend of 23-25 June will fill fast on release of camp details via an email. Any questions should be directed to Coordinator Dom Crowley. A few days running around Noosa Heads, Coolum Beach area and eating lots and lots of food is great fun.

Outstanding Student Achievements

Liam Botting competed in the Youth Climbing Nationals in Sydney last weekend. The Nationals was a massive event with over 240 youth competitors. Liam enjoyed great personal success. With 32 boys in his category he placed 14th in Lead, 13th in Bouldering and 9th in Speed with a total Australian ranking of 8th place. Liam keeps himself in shape as part of the St Patrick's Cross Country Squad.

Giant Pumpkin Wins Second Prize

Our proud and hardworking Paddies Gardeners have proven yet again that they can grow an excellent crop of vegetables! Over the weekend, they entered an enormous pumpkin into the The 2018 Royal Queensland Show, Heaviest Pumpkin Competition. The event, which is the longest running competition at the Ekka, attracts entries from all over the State.

Their hard work and persistence paid off and the pumpkin placed second in the school’s division, weighing in at a massive 8.5kgs! Mrs Hunt, the chief gardening guru has spent a lot of time with the boys, fertilising, weeding and giving the...

Mrs Hunt, the chief gardening guru has spent a lot of time with the boys, fertilising, weeding and giving the pumpkin lots of encouragement and support to grow.

As a school’s division entrant, it was only fitting that he wore his school tie and hat with pride.

Gardening tips from three of our regular gardeners (Zen, James and Jackson 5E)

  • Water the pumpkin daily
  • Provide the pumpkin with lots of fertiliser
  • Chop off any extra pumpkins on the vine, to give it the best chance to grow huge
  • Use encouraging, kind words when speaking to the pumpkin

They are looking forward to growing an even bigger pumpkin next year!
