This Sunday is a significant day for all our families as we celebrate Mother’s Day. We started a little early this morning with a special Mother’s Mass for students and their mothers before school began.

St Patrick’s College was a Christian Brother’s College before the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) network was developed. Consequently, we still carry some of the legacies left by the Brothers.

One such legacy is their devotion to Mary, Mother of God. Edmund Rice was well-known for his devotion to Mary through his constant praying of the rosary. In terms of motherhood, there is probably no greater example of a mother that was “thrown into the deep end”, from the birth of Jesus through to his death on the Cross during her lifetime. There would be little doubt that her life as a mother would have been very challenging especially in the final days of her son’s life. Apart from her strength in faith, Mary demonstrated unqualified, love, care and compassion throughout her life. Her love was evident and Jesus’s love for her was also so very apparent. During our times as parents, their will be moments of disappointment and despair with our children. Unqualified love gives each of us permission to overlook some of these behaviours and unkind words to take us back to remember a time when our young man was a babe in arms and needed the protection of a mother to start in the world.

It would be fair to say that as young men develop through their adolescent stage, this love and care can sometimes be expressed in different ways. Sometimes it might even be challenged, but it is always there. This Sunday is a time for each young man to tell their mothers how much they love them and how much they care through their words and actions. What our young men do not realise is that there will always be a part of their childhood within each mother. I hope that every mother is made to feel special on Sunday.

Thank you to the many mothers and their sons who were able to attend this morning’s Mass. It is the first time that we have celebrated Mother’s Day in this fashion and I hope that everyone enjoyed the occasion.

Next Monday evening (14 May), we will be holding our second Year 12 Parent and Son Information Evening. It will be held in the Christian Brothers Building commencing at 6:00pm. This meeting has been set aside for the parents and students who are undertaking an OP Pathway. The purpose of the evening is to update the parents about the Year 12 cohort’s progress with their QCS preparation and practices. We will also talk about ways that we can continue to improve in this area and what the students can do to assist with this endeavour. The session is only aimed at the students in an OP or ranking pathway and will be sitting the QCS Test. Students undertaking a VET pathway are not required to attend this meeting. I look forward to catching up with the parents on the evening.

Students from Years 5, 7 and 9 will undertake the NAPLAN tests next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Much has been said about NAPLAN testing in the media recently. At St Patrick’s, our data team and Heads of Curriculum scrutinise the results that are forwarded to us. This gives us further information regarding individual students as well as the year level cohort. The information from the tests is also able to be placed on our analytics tool to gather knowledge of student and cohort learning growths from test to test. Such information added with in-school results and other external testing can give us some idea of student and cohort potential as well as evidence to consider about the impact of our teaching or programs within certain year levels.

Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, all students in Years 6 and 8 will be participating in their camp experience. This is a great time for each of the young men to be involved in activities that they may not be used to or find quite challenging. In the younger year levels, it is not unusual for some boys to feel a little anxious about the camps because it is quite a change from their normal routines and family life. Alternatively, it is great fun and a wonderful experience and chance to try new things and appreciate new activities. It has been my experience in past years that sometimes some of our parents become more anxious about the camps than the students. This can then cause the young man to become more nervous than excited. I would encourage all parents to ensure that their son goes to the camp and when speaking to him about the opportunity, remind him of the fun and exiting activities that he will encounter whilst at the camp.

This Friday evening and Saturday, our Chess, Rugby and Football teams will be travelling to St Laurence’s for all our games. “Laurie’s” are a fellow EREA school and we always enjoy spirited and competitive games from both schools. I hope that every young man enjoys himself and I look forward to catching up with parents during the day.

I recently received a letter from the Brisbane City Council (BCC) regarding the drop-off and pick-up of our students. The BCC is always concerned about child safety and have asked me to remind all parents to be mindful of the parking regulations (especially double-parking or driveways). They also advised that they would be “out and about” at schools in this area to enforce any traffic or parking violations. Please ensure that you are aware of the signage around our school and avoid any double parking or parking across driveways of the residents.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Thanks to the introduction of College Coin, St Patrick's students will now have the ability to pay for purchases at the Tuckshop via their Student Card.

College Coin allows parents to add funds electronically to their son’s accounts, no matter where they are, allowing for a truly cash free environment. Both parents and their son/s will be configured with a College Coin account so that in the future our cashless vision can extend to our Merchandise Store, Curlew Park Canteen and selected Student Services.

Parents can manage multiple student accounts. They can transfer funds between all accounts and view account statements to see how their money is being used.

An account can be locked, so that it cannot be accessed by the student to purchase goods or in the event the Student Card is lost, the College Coin account can be locked and protected.

Parents can register a credit card for account top-ups. Students can use the cash top-up machine at the College to add cash values to their accounts. Please note that each student is issued with a $10 printing allowance from the College at the start of each year - this printing allowance is not part of College Coin and therefore is not accessible for cashless purchases at the College, it is for printing only.

Please familiarise yourself with the College Coin Terms and Conditions TAP HERE before stepping through the process to create a College Coin account.

Setting up a College Coin Account

To configure your College Coin account, please select the College Coin link from the Parent Dashboard in REALM:

College-Coin-1.jpg?mtime=20180322102641#

The first time you access this area you will need to step through the account creation process. Three things to note:

  • Be sure to select Parent Account in the first drop-down list.

College-Coin-2.jpg?mtime=20180322102829#

  • You will need to enter a password, this can be anything you like
  • Please use the same email address you have registered with the College

Using College Coin

Once you have logged into your account you will be able to see the accounts for your son/s.

College-Coin-3.jpg?mtime=20180322102912#

If you have multiple sons at the College, you can add value to one account and transfer funds to the other accounts, allowing for one transaction. The Transfer option needs to be enabled under the Options, Transfer Funds tab.

If you have any issues setting up your College Coin account, please contact the St Patrick’s College Helpdesk via helpdesk@stpatricks.qld.edu.au.

It was an opportunity to take stock and look at current levels of achievement (feedback) against the targets set (feed up) and look to the term ahead to see what can be done to improve (feedforward).Term 2 is always a busy one with several events and public holidays that impact on the length of our week. Our senior students need to be mindful of imminent due dates for assessment. It was apparent from some of the meetings I had, that some of the study planners so meticulously created at the start of the year have gathered dust somewhere on a desk at home!I remind all students and parents that the setting of the target is only the first step in the process:

T: what is my Target?

A: what will I do to Achieve my target?

O: what Obstacle might stand in my way?

P: how will I Plan for this obstacle?

Next Monday night (14 May 2018) will be an opportunity to hear how the cohort as a whole are tracking, in particular their performance to date on QCS Practices. All OP eligible students are aware of what significant impact this has on their OP.

Any feedback regarding Parent Teacher Interviews is most welcome.

Shakin' Up Shakespeare

When William Shakespeare penned Lady Macbeth’s hurried words of comfort to her husband after King Duncan’s bloody murder, “A little water clears us of this deed,” (Macbeth II.ii.12) I often wonder if he was aware of the magic contained within this symbolic phrase. Did he quietly acknowledge to himself that he had captured the failings of humanity – how we flee from the consequences of our actions – within these carefully chosen words? Or was it all by chance; a mere addition of a line to enhance Lady Macbeth’s foolishness?

When William Shakespeare penned Lady Macbeth’s hurried words of comfort to her husband after King Duncan’s bloody murder, “A little water clears us of this deed,” (Macbeth II.ii.12) I often wonder if he was aware of the magic contained within this symbolic phrase. Did he quietly acknowledge to himself that he had captured the failings of humanity – how we flee from the consequences of our actions – within these carefully chosen words? Or was it all by chance; a mere addition of a line to enhance Lady Macbeth’s foolishness?

As insightful as we often believe the Bard to be, I doubt that he would have been able to envision hordes of Year 12 students busily dissecting these words to understand their ability to capture the human condition and, in turn, connect with modern audiences.

In a world of power struggles and selfish ambition, it is little surprise that this play can transfer effortlessly from the Elizabethan stage to a modern-day context, ensuring the play’s place as a staple within the English senior syllabus. This means that, once again, at St Patrick’s College, the senior classes are in the throws of examining this transcendent text, which they will continue to do so over the course of Term 2.

To bring life to the antiquated language, Shake & Stir (Brisbane’s premier Shakespearian acting troupe) was invited last week to perform their modernised version of the Scottish play – as it is often referred to by superstitious players – The Macbeth’s.With only three actors and a minimalistic set, it was hard not to be awe-struck by the young players who delivered their lines in flawless Shakespearian, expertly demonstrating the fracturing of Macbeth and his lady. At the end of the 60-minute performance, it became painfully evident that “a little water” would never remove the blood on this ruthless couple’s hands, as we witnessed their eventual tragic demise.

Clearly, Shakespeare’s works are designed to be performed, rather than read in isolation within a classroom. It is therefore hoped that the addition of this opportunity to see this central work live on stage will add a new dimension of understanding of the text’s complexities for the students, particularly as we continue to closely analyse the play in class.

The senior teachers and myself are excited to see this understanding transferred to the students’ upcoming assessment items. Individually, they will ponder what the text might mean to students such as themselves in the modern world, in addition to analysing how Shakespeare constructs his central themes for his audiences.

It is always a pleasure passing on a text to our students that has long been held up as the pinnacle of English literature. Shakespeare only continues to live if we continue to value his impact on the world in which we live… A concept we, as their teachers, hope our young men hold onto before we utter, “Out, out brief candle” (V.v.19) to another term of Macbeth at our College.

Mrs Chelsea Parakas – Head of Curriculum - English

Cyberbullying – supporting your child online

Childhood bullying used to be face-to-face physical and verbal behaviour in the playground, classroom and on the way to and from school. Now online technology and constant connectivity has allowed bullying to harm children through often anonymous contact or actions. Cyberbullying can happen at any time and leave a child feeling unsafe and alone.

Cyberbullying commonly occurs through:

  • Comments posted in an open online environment such as Facebook.
  • Direct text, email or instant messages online or on a mobile phone.
  • Private features on social networking services such as Snapchat and Facebook Messenger. Children can manage cyberbullying with your support by taking the following action:
  • Blocking the person cyberbullying and changing privacy settings. Retaliating or responding to the perpetrator only gives them the attention and power they want.
  • Reporting the bullying. Most websites have online safety centres and reporting facilities. Online abuse is in violation of the Terms Of Use of most social networking sites. The Office of the eSafety Commission can take complaints and provide assistance in relation to serious cyberbullying material that is directed at a particular child with the intention to seriously embarrass, harass, threaten or humiliate.
  • Collecting the evidence. Keeping mobile phone messages and printing emails or IM conversations.
  • Talking to someone they trust like parents or a teacher.
  • Visiting iParent for a list of sources of professional support including the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, eheadspace on 1800 650 890 or parentline.
  • Taking the cyberbullying quiz. There is also a quiz for parents.
  • Watch the “Chatterbox” video and listen to the podcast about cyberbullying.

It was a successful day last Saturday against St Peter’s Lutheran College. The Paddy's Battalion, who always support all teams with enthusiasm, were present and in full voice. This week they have put out a challenge to our community to increase our numbers, so we have extra support away at Runcorn playing St Laurence’s College. All teams except 10C Football are playing at SLC, playing fields.

Full canteen facilities are always available on Saturday’s at Curlew Park. Last weekend Mr David Row, our Canteen Coordinator, was very appreciative of the support received from parents. Many hands make light work! An early request for all community members to assist next Saturday, 19 May for Back to Shorncliffe Day. The canteen is particularly short of help later in the day after 12:00pm during the senior games. If you can assist by serving or cooking on the BBQ please drop in while your son is participating in his warm up activities.

Parent and students are reminded that Football and Rugby Yearbook team photos will be taken approximately an hour before kick off next Saturday during Back to Shorncliffe Day. PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR THE PHOTO TIMES.

Students must be correctly attired to compete for St Patrick’s College. Rugby shorts must be green not blue as was the case with a few senior players last Saturday. Students are also reminded to pack or wear their formal uniform to the game. Student and parent circumstances change throughout Saturday so the students should pack a formal uniform in case they decide to remain after competition games. This enables students to stay and be part of the Paddy's Battalion during the later games. Students who arrive before warm up should be wearing formal uniform. Many players have a team rule to turn up in formal uniform which projects a real ideal of being a proud Paddy's Man.

Spectators are reminded that it is a safety regulation that everyone except match officials must remain behind the ‘red’ line adjacent to all playing field sidelines at Curlew Park. Thank you for your assistance in maintaining a safe playing environment for the players and match officials.

Thank you to all parents for being diligent in arriving at Curlew Park promptly after 5:00pm to collect your son after training. The team coaches really appreciate this so they are able to depart quickly themselves to spend time with their families and evening commitments.
