This week marks an important week in our Lenten season. Last Sunday was Palm Sunday. The Mass was different from our usual Sunday rituals. Firstly, there was a ritual with the reading of the Gospel before the usual sequence of the Mass and then there was the blessing of the palms and procession into the church carrying the palms. Secondly, the Passion of our Lord, Jesus Christ was read where the Gospel would have ordinarily have been read. These readings explain the final days for Jesus Christ before his death on Good Friday. It is an extraordinary story of the fickle nature of people and how mobs can so easily be manipulated by those who have self-serving agendas. On Palm Sunday, Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem with open arms with crowds lining the street dropping palms and cloaks onto the road in front of him as his rode into the city. In less than a week, he was prosecuted, persecuted and killed by many of the same people. The treachery was done by the chief priests who saw Jesus as a threat to their faith and power. The most despairing betrayal was that of Judas, one of his disciples. This Friday and Sunday are two very significant days in our faith. On Good Friday we participate in a very solemn ceremony commemorating the death of Jesus through crucifixion on the cross. It is a ritual that allows us to reflect upon the life of Jesus and the meaning that his life brings to us. This meaning is usually reflected in our own actions and beliefs. In our Catholic faith, Jesus “died so that we could live”. It is through the example of how he lived his life that we were truly shown how to “live life to the full”. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. We are shown that there is new life after death and that following the life of Jesus we also will find new life. Our young men come to a Catholic community each school day where Jesus is placed into the centre of what we do. They learn how to live the life of Jesus through the religious education that they receive in the classroom and by participating in the religious life of the school. This is done through the simple things such as how we treat each other through to participation in retreats and the many service programs and opportunities made available to the students.

We recently forwarded a communication to all families regarding the new student reporting processes. Now that we have moved to continuous “live” reporting, there will not be an end of term report as has been the case in past years. This has been explained in the communication. The Parent/Teacher Interviews will occur as usual in the second term. Parents and students will also be notified (through REALM) of any exam results as they have been marked by the teachers.

Yesterday, the College staff and students started our final day with a Liturgy and farewell Assembly. Our Liturgy was a reminder to the students about the significance of the next few days in our Catholic faith. After the Liturgy, I thanked our staff for the wonderful work that they have done in the first term and farewelled Mrs Di McRoberts, Ms Rhiannon Hibberd and Mr Chris Campbell. Each of these staff members are leaving us. Di McRoberts has been with us for a short time and has worked in the area of Learning Support for three days a week. Di has a vast amount of expertise in this area and we have been very fortunate to have her with us during the past year. One of her legacies will be the knowledge that she has imparted onto the staff in this area. Di will be travelling to Scotland to spend some time with her son. Rhiannon has been with us for over three years. She has done an outstanding job teaching from Year 5 Science and Maths through to Year 12 Biology. Rhiannon is well-known within our community for her planning, preparation and teaching skills. Her movement to Ormiston College will certainly be our loss and their gain. On behalf of this community, I wish them the very best in their future endeavours.

Mr Chris Campbell leaves us to take the role of Head of Campus – Southern Cross College. He has been a past student (and school captain), former teacher of English and Religion and currently Dean of Teaching and Learning. Because of this, Chris has spent 22 years of his life associated with the College, which is also about a third of the life of the College. His impact on this school over those years has been very significant. He has guided the College through some quite significant educational changes from both within our own community and the external authorities and legislative changes and requirements. He has undertaken each of the roles mentioned above with great knowledge, expertise and humility. I have included a part of my farewell speech to Chris from this morning.

At St Patrick’s, we talk about forming Men of Action. We do this by developing men of faith, learning and humility. If Mr Campbell’s teachers from St Patrick’s in the 1970s could see the person that he has turned into since leaving this College, they would certainly believe that they had formed such a man and they would be very proud of their achievement.Personally, I would like to thank you for sharing your loyalty, friendship and professional expertise – I know that I have grown personally and professionally as a result of our acquaintance.

Great things are achieved by ordinary people doing extraordinary things – Mr Campbell is a clear testament to this.
I know that his decision to leave St Patrick’s was a difficult one and I am sure that you will all agree that our loss is Southern Cross College’s gain. Mr. Campbell, you will always be remembered fondly by the SPC community – as a man of action and role model to the many young man who you have taught, and for your significant contribution to the fabric of this school for almost one third of its existence. Thank you for all that you have done for us and continue to fight the good fight in Scarborough.

There are several co-curricular tours, camps and clinics taking place over the holiday break. I would like to thank the many staff members who are running these activities for the students. I am sure that their generosity of time to allow for these activities to happen is very much appreciated by the young men and their families.

The holiday break is an excellent time for each of our young men to relax and refresh so that they have renewed energy for the second term. It is also my hope that all families also can share some quality time with their children over the holiday period.

I wish everyone a Holy Easter break and look forward to gathering together again next term.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Mr Chris Mayes – College Principal

Thanks to the introduction of College Coin, St Patrick's students will now have the ability to pay for purchases at the Tuckshop via their Student Card.

College Coin allows parents to add funds electronically to their son’s accounts, no matter where they are, allowing for a truly cash free environment. Both parents and their son/s will be configured with a College Coin account so that in the future our cashless vision can extend to our Merchandise Store, Curlew Park Canteen and selected Student Services.

Parents can manage multiple student accounts. They can transfer funds between all accounts and view account statements to see how their money is being used.

An account can be locked, so that it cannot be accessed by the student to purchase goods or in the event the Student Card is lost, the College Coin account can be locked and protected.

Parents can register a credit card for account top-ups. Students can use the cash top-up machine at the College to add cash values to their accounts. Please note that each student is issued with a $10 printing allowance from the College at the start of each year - this printing allowance is not part of College Coin and therefore is not accessible for cashless purchases at the College, it is for printing only.

Please familiarise yourself with the College Coin Terms and Conditions TAP HERE before stepping through the process to create a College Coin account.

Setting up a College Coin Account

To configure your College Coin account, please select the College Coin link from the Parent Dashboard in REALM:

College-Coin-1.jpg?mtime=20180322102641#

St Patrick’s has been an integral part of my life.As a student, Head of Department and member of the College Leadership Team, I have spent a total of 21 years at the College. The decision to leave the College was one to which I gave a lot of thought. Life, however, is about being prepared to challenge oneself continually. It’s always sad to leave a place to which you are connected, but I am excited at the road which lies ahead of me at Southern Cross.

I have watched our College grow from a small school in the 1970’s into the thriving institution of educational excellence that it is today. In my last 10 years, our community has been led magnificently by two great principals in Michael Carrol and Chris Mayes. Both men have inspired College Leadership Teams, Middle Leaders and general staff to be excellent in everything they do. Your sons are in fine hands at St Patrick’s with such a dedicated, hardworking and talented staff.

I spoke to the students today about the unique never say die attitude for the St Patrick’s students. The great success enjoyed by so many of our students is testimony to their talent and work ethic. This whole community and my time spent here will for all time hold a special place in my heart.

Thank you

Mr Chris Campbell – Dean of Teaching and Learning

This week’s instalment of the data collated via the Tutor Group Mentoring and Senior Mentoring programs centres around our students’ use of social media, gaming and the internet and their sleep patterns. Below you can see the difference between the sleep patterns during the week versus the weekend, keeping in mind the measurement error that can occur in surveys (for example, the 3 to 4 hour sleep bracket data are most likely not reliable). It would seem that many of our boys are not getting enough sleep during the week and are attempting to make up for it on the weekend:

Sleep-per-week-night.JPG?mtime=201803290

Sleep-per-weekend-night.JPG?mtime=201803

Below is the summary for the time our boys are spending on social media, gaming and the internet.

Gaming-week-night.JPG?mtime=201803290942

Gaming-weekend.JPG?mtime=20180329094309#

It is visually apparent that this time increases on the weekend with approximately one third of our student body spending over 7 hours in front of a screen on the weekend. We also have a considerable number of students spending over 3 hours per night on gaming, social media and the internet on a school night. Some of these boys have also acknowledged that one of the greatest obstacles standing in the way of them achieving their goals is the time they spend gaming. It would be difficult to disagree with them as the time they are spending gaming is impacting negatively in two ways; one by taking up time that could be spent perfecting an assignment or preparing for an exam and two, by impacting on the amount of sleep they should be getting to ensure they are prepared for the day ahead.

“For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another” 1 John

The call of Easter is always the same and yet it is always relevant and new – the season calls us to that constant question ‘how well am I loving others?’

The narrative of the death and resurrection of Jesus is full of different characters that are there to help us reflect on ourselves. The tragic figure of Judas reminds of the times when we betray and then are caught up in our guilt and negativity – Judas’ story shows us a figure so locked in his negativity that there is no way out for him. In contrast, the character of Peter shows us the same story of betrayal but one that can accept his guilt and instead throws himself on God’s mercy rather than locking himself in a world of pain. The figure of Mary standing at the foot of the cross reminds us of the fidelity that we are all capable of if we have the courage to reach out in trust to God and to hope. The journey of Jesus through the story of Holy Week is full of the key motifs of our faith – the one who endures injustice, yet overcomes; the man of gentleness who is victimised, yet triumphs; the story of a death that is not the end – the eternal story of hope, renewing and calling us on.

What does this story have to say to us today – ‘Do not despair, love will see us through’. Our world at the moment seems a bleak and negative place as the various world leaders allow their egos to rule us. The challenge of Easter is to say that hate and injustice is never acceptable, and we must stand up with the Risen Jesus against what is wrong. The terrible story of bloodshed in the recent Florida shooting casts a pall over us all, yet the young people in the USA, standing up and demanding change, is the Easter story writ large for us all to see and engage with today. In our families we are being called to remember that Jesus’ death and resurrection is the pattern of what it means to love, resurrection and new life will come. In our day to day relationships, Easter calls us to be authentic, to be hopeful, and to see the potential for growth all around us.

Let us pray for one another this Easter that we may be more and more conscious of the presence of Jesus with us.

Mr Tim Kenny – Dean of Identity

From sculptures, drawings to relief work. The boys have certainly been making some wonderful creations. We have three projects simultaneously running.

The first has been our Giacometti sculptures made from pipe cleaners and covered in foil. Once these were created students had the opportunity to personalise them. Our Giacometti sculptures were wearing tops hats, capes, riding hover boards and motorbikes.

The second item are 2D drawings emphasising on line. These entailed the boys to out line their arms on to A3 paper. Each of their drawn arms were intricately filled with meticulous lines and patterns. These ranged from organic lines to a combination of geometric lines.

The third item just in their beginning are Picasso faces created from cardboard boxes. Students focus solely on geometric shapes. The outline of every aspect and characteristic of the face is cut out of cardboard boxes and given depth through the layering of theses shapes. Students will then get the opportunity to paint their Picasso faces using vibrant and energetic colours which compliment their creative minds.

Art Club is always full of positive energy and creativity, buzzing on a Friday afternoon from 3:15 – 4:15pm. A great way to end the week. If you are still interested in taking part, we will be continuing in Term 2. Just drop in to B1A2 in the Christian Brothers Building. Our Realm page is running a blog! Let us know what you like about Art Club and what you would like to make. (Please see photos below of some of our artwork created during the term.)

Enjoy the Easter break and stay creative.

Debating

The Year 10 debating team notched their first win of the season, scoring a one point victory over St Paul’s School in their Round 2 QDU fixture at St Patrick’s on Wednesday night.

The team worked together well with a stand-out performance from second speaker Heath Huelin.

Year 12 report:

Last night the year 12 debating team took on St Peter’s Lutheran College in the second round of the QDU debating competition. The topic for the debate was “That economic sanctions do more harm than good” was well argued by our team from the affirmative position however unfortunately we lost in a close decision. Our team last night was led from the floor by Max Freedman who excelled in the role of third affirmative ably supported by Tom Kelman at first and Sean Dobson at second. Overall the adjudicator summed up the debate best in his comments, “what a wonderful debate of such high quality and all prepared while you have obviously being completing exams in the last two weeks.”

Mr Jonathan Brough - Year 12 Coach

Upcoming Debates:

Year 8:

Round 2: YOU ARE: Affirmative vs. St Joseph's Nudgee College 8.1 at 8:00pm on 2018-04-26 VENUE: St Paul's School
Topic: That school should be four days a week

The excitement is starting to build as we head into the 2018 AIC season. As the defending champions we are expecting some fierce competition. Our first match is a trial against Villanova on Friday April 20 (Week 1). This is an away game and we will be sending additional teams. More news on this next week.

Tuesday afternoon saw the first part of our Senior College Chess Championships. We were extremely pleased with the number of students who entered and part two will take place on Tuesday April 17 at 3pm.

If your son is attending Chess Club and is able to play AIC on Friday afternoons in Term 2 I need to know. The availability survey is now closed so an email letting me know will suffice.

Junior Chess Club will recommence on Tuesday April 17 (Day 1).

We are hitting the ground running for what is shaping up to be an awesome season.
