Artist in Residence Program

Each year, we invite an artist in residence to work with the talented Creative Arts students of St Patrick’s College. Last year we had a director come in to work with the senior Drama students for their production. This year we were very proud to work with talented composer and conductor Paul Jarman. Paul gave workshops for the Year 9 – 12 Music classes and rehearsed with all three of the College choirs. It was a treat for some of the Year 5 woodwind and brass students to also hear him demonstrate his flair for and knowledge of some lesser-known wind instruments. While Paul has now returned to his home in Valla, near Coffs Harbour, his work with us is not finished. We have commissioned him to write a new choir piece for our College and we can’t wait to hear this new composition. To research for the new piece, Paul spent time with the students working on the Paddy’s Van, and was also lucky enough to hear the entire College sing “The Call” at Assembly. I’m sure this will give him ample inspiration for the original composition.

Celebration of the Arts

Congratulations to the 150 Year 8 students who participated in the second Celebration of the Arts event last Thursday evening. Students had been working hard in their Visual Art, Music and Drama classes to present their final performances to a very appreciative audience. After they all enjoyed a yummy pizza dinner, the evening started on the historic Shorncliffe Pier and included circus items, junk percussion performances and hand-made lantern displays. Soon it was time to move up for the floating ceremony where the Art students floated their lanterns on the pool to make a beautiful effect. The final part of the evening was a formal performance in the Christian Brothers Building where all classes were able to display their skills once again. Many thanks to teachers Mr Lester, Mr Royes, Mr Vanni, Miss Matthew and Mr McNally for their efforts during the term to help the students display their entertaining skills. Thanks also to the other Creative Arts teachers who assisted in the evening.
