Week 16 in Culture
This week in Culture there are updates from Chess, Co-Curricular Music, Debating, Theatresports and the Cultural Support Group.
Last week was a very successful week for the Chessmen. Following on from our second place at the Brisbane Interschool Chess Competition, we travelled to St Peter’s Lutheran College at Indooroopilly. Some excellent play saw our players score a resounding 59 to 21 victory.
This Friday we are hosting St Laurence’s College in our final home game of the season. They will be formidable opponents and we are hoping that our good form continues.
Mark’s tip of the week: have a look at this website: Kenilworth Chess Club – Stonewall Attack (click here for link») for a great chess lecture and lots of games.
Please note the finishing times of Chess Club:
- Senior Chess Club (Years 9 to 12) – Monday 3:00 to 4:30pm
- Junior Chess Club (Years 5 to 8) – Tuesday 3:00 to 4:15pm

The 2016 QDU sadly came to an end last night for our Year 9 debaters, who fought valiantly with a man down to only narrowly lose. Nevertheless, the season was, overall, a win for our young men, who developed their confidence, logical reasoning, public speaking skills and team work in this the most excellent of co-curricular activities – I truly hope they stay with it next year!
Our Year 11s also had a night of upsets, with both the 11.1s and 11.2s going down to their opponents – nevertheless, they have to be congratulated on their determination and work ethic in getting so far! Short prep debates are mentally and physically gruelling – with teams only getting an hour to prep three eight-minute speeches on their side, with no access to resources, we can only boggle at the stress and strain this puts on the young men. Whilst nevertheless being impressed by their resilience and grit, this sadly means an end to the season for our 11.1 team. However, I congratulate our 11.2s on their berth in the finals series!
Next week, our Year 10s and 12s battle on home turf again in a night of exciting short-prep topics! As usual, spectators are extremely welcome, particularly for the 12.1s, who need to win this round to make it into the finals series.
QDU Round 4 Debates for Year 10 and Year 12 will be held Thursday, June 2 2016 at St Patrick’s College. Please see below for details of your debate:
- Year 10.1 - St Patrick's College 9.1 versus Mt Maria College Petrie 10.1 at 7:00pm. Topic: Short preparation topic
- Year 12.1 - St Patrick's College versus Craigslea State High School 12.1 at 7:00pm. Topic: Short preparation topic
- Year 12.2 - St Patrick's College versus Unity College 12.1at 7:00pm. Topic: Short preparation topic
