Mr John J Kennedy was the Tenth Principal of St Patrick’s College. He was Principal from 1995-July 1999. He was the first lay Principal of St Patrick’s College which symbolised the connection of the “Lay” with the “Christian Brothers”. During his time the introduction of the Vertical House system with four Houses occurred.
Mr Kennedy described the vertical House system as a significant aspect of his time at St Patrick’s. The vertical House system, he described, as the unit of school organization that with the support of the Assistant Principal Student Formation and House Deans had worked most effectively in addressing the pastoral care needs of the boys.
John Kennedy was described as a very humble and self-effacing man. His integrity was unquestionable and he was a gentleman whom Edmund Rice would be proud of. He worked very closely with the Student Representative Council to improve aspects around the College. Fans being placed in most classrooms in 1999 was a big winner with the students.
Mr Kennedy summed up his sentiments of his time at St Patrick’s College in the quotation, “One crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name”. His work covered a very busy, vigorous time enriched by opportunity and challenge and highlighted by achievement.
Due to increased enrolments in 2007 and a strong desire to continue outstanding pastoral care, Kennedy House was introduced in 2007.
