5A v Ashgrove
Victory 20 -5
What a magnificent game of Rugby. The boys have realized the importance and power of 2nd and 3rd phase play. We held the ball phase after phase. The forwards showed their commitment to winning the ball back in every tackle especially in the second half. The backs ran with confidence with the ball. Again out tenacious defence tied up the opposition. Many St Pats boys have never experienced winning against Ashgrove. It is great that these Leprechauns have started with a win. Special mention for Alex Buckland who had his best game when acting as Captain and Man of the Match award to Dan Robinson for his try scored by charging down the ball to score a try at a pivotal time in the match. His attack and defence were a platform to our win.
Mark Mewburn
5B v Ashgrove
Victory 15 -5 A tremor ran through the Ashgrove pack on Saturday, several times in fact, mainly due to the impact of Man of the Match Tom (Tremor) Trembath! It was good to finally see a win after all the hard work. The Leprechauns played wonderfully as individuals and sensationally as a Team. Thanks to our Squad players |
For their help. This week another mighty game to be played.
Ron Moore
5C v Ashgrove
Loss 31 -5
What a fantastic game. The kicking foot of Damian gained much needed early ground from the kick off. Rhys began displaying his newly acquired tackling skills, Drew showed how straight he could throw the ball in the Line outs. Henry really chased the ball down and Luke hammered the ground like there was no tomorrow. Jacob never let one Ashgrovian get passed and Sam really showed his dominance in the Forward pack. James played his last game and played like a man possessed. Young Matt Hawker had a strong game in defence which was matched by “DD” who was constantly hungry for the ball. Although slight Callum really moved the earth with some of his tackles. Over all every member of the team played impressive rugby. It was a hard game against strong opposition but each week the Leprechauns get better and better.

5A v Terrace
A disappointing result for a game where we seemed to play as well if not better than the Terrace Team. Well done again to all the boys for their tenacious defence and attack. Again we keep on improving but are simply frustrated by a lack of scoring opportunities. Our backs seemed not to get enough ball to make use of and we will need to work on that at training. This team has great potential and once we solve the problem of scoring, we will be a handful for any team in the competition. Well done to Jack Kent and Alex Buckland for their tireless efforts in defence and in winning the ball in loose play.
Mark Mewburn
5B v Terrace What do we have to do to pick the scores up! Yes, we did have a couple of decisions go against us but this should give us more determination to break back. Each member of the team has a job to do and they know this, they are reminded each training session. As a team we are improving, the tackles are hard and pushing the opposition back but we still need to drive over the ball in the “clean outs”. We have the power but we are not using it. |
This is a great little team so boys, lets fire up for this game!
Ron Moore
5C v Terrace
These Leprechauns will not sit down! Unfortunately they are still displaying their love of vegetables! The boys need to take up their positions and stick to their opposition man. In training they play hard, attack the ball and on a number of occasions absolutely hammering the coach. If they could place this energy onto the paddock during the competition game we would see a greater number of tries. Young Callum played like a Terrier, always on the heels of the opposition. Damian showed a great kicking game gaining great metres after the kick. Drew had fantastic control of the ball in the Line-outs and Rhys in tackling like a man possessed! Matt is chasing hard and James is leading by example along with Sam. Every Leprechaun has the potential for better play so, lets make this weekend the Test Match!

5A v TSS
Loss 19 –
When the Leprechauns faced up against the enormous TSS forward pack, they made a decision not to be intimidated. Our forwards dominated theirs. Our backs were tenacious in defence, but the scoreline didn’t reflect the great effort of our boys. Each of their 3 tries were the result of a mistake due to lack of experience with Rugby. Two tries were scored seconds from the end of a half. These errors are happening less and less each week. Our aim next week is to work on our attack options as we certainly had enough ball possession to have won the game. It is difficult to name outstanding players as all the Leprechauns did well, but special congratulations to Nick Jeffries who had an outstanding game, showing great courage and determination in defence. A special mention for Jackson Roberts for his strength in defence and improved handling skills.
Mark Mewburn
5B v Iona
Loss 37 - 0 What a great attacking game. The boys individually |
Executed their mission. Many of the boys picked up the pace and stayed focused. Some good tackles were presented and completed.
Ron Moore
5C v Iona
Loss 35 – 5
These Leprechauns launched onto the field with a game plan. Unfortunately that game plan came unstuck early in the game when a few decisions didn’t quite go their way. A try should have been scored in the first 3 minutes after some fantastic positioning from the forwards, but, unfortunately, lack of concentration and unsafe hands saw the ball being picked up the opposition. Most of the game was seen in the Forwards with little action happening out in the Backs, this really needs attention. Our kicking game also needs to be addressed. We need to look for the gaps in play and communicate with the team. Our focus this week will be
“position, position, position”.Congratulations to Sam Huth for a great game as Captain and Riley Pennisi always chasing the ball.

5A v Iona
Loss 27 – 5
The 5 A team lined up against a much stronger side last week at Iona. Whilst we lost the game, there are many pluses from the experience. Our forwards showed great improvement in skills and a willingness to get involved. They were probably a better pack than Iona. Our backs learned that we must work hard at defence out wide as well as working hard at getting the ball out wide faster to our talented centres. Well done to Matt Alexson who came into the forwards at late notice and who worked very hard. Also a pat on the back to Jack Kent and Luke Teeuwsen whose defence was fierce.
Mark Mewburn.
5B v Iona
Loss 56 - 5
Funny game football! An unbelievable come from behind to win last week and we couldn’t take a trick this week. I can’t say I was disappointed though. I thought the effort by our boys was fantastic. Dave and I were very proud.
A few players really stood out this week. Harry Rehm |
had a great game, leading from the front as a captain should. Andrew Haines continues to improve, watch out A Graders! Matthew Wyllie, the smallest player on the field, continually tackled the biggest players, showing what enormous heart he has. Everyone else had their usual wonderful effort with special mention to Fabian Power and Tom McNamara.
Ron Moore
5C v Iona
Loss 25 - 5
Sometimes in life it is the hard knocks that we learn from. Boy did the Iona boys know how to “clean out”! This was a very hard game, with the boys coming up against a particularly strong team, so to manage to take a try from them was fantastic. Young “Dangerous” was everywhere and probably he took half the field home with him. Rhys worked hard in the forward back and was brilliantly supported by Sam. The backs still need to move up quickly and search for the gaps. A great game by all the boys.

5A v
Brisbane Boys
College. Win 12 - 7
There is always much more excitement in a close fought game. Last Saturday’s
game against College was a great way to start the season. The Leprechauns have
started to show great team work and improvements in positive play. Every time we
got the ball we looked dangerous. Well done to Sam Gatsby and Dan Robinson for
making the most of the opportunities and scoring tries. Strong defence and
enthusiasm earned us the win. The challenge for this week is for the forwards to
drive over the ball. Stronger teams will punish us if we can’t win the all in
the rucks.
Mark Mewburn.
5B v Brisbane
Boys College.
Win 35 - 21
The first half saw the Leprechauns trying to wake from sleep. There were
numerous opportunities for tries to be made but the determination was lacking.
In the second half we saw a renewed team of men and |
they played united. There were some huge tackles, great rucks and a few nicely
bound mauls. The 5A’s had better watch out! There was some great rugby played by
a number of the boys. Good luck for this week end.
Ron Moore
5C v Nudgee Junior Win 25-25
In what were hot and testing conditions, these men played a tremendous game of
rugby. It was based on hard tackling, running hard and never giving in. All of
the team should be very proud of their commitment to the game. Callum Molloy
showed tremendous skill and determination and Damian McMahon tackled himself to
a standstill and provided good service to the backs.

Internal College Trials.
There was certainly some fantastic rugby played on the weekend. I was most
impressed with the way these Leprechauns put their heart and soul into the game.
There was a remarkable improvement in game play especially in relation to the
break down of play. The Forward pack, seem to have found their feet and were
constantly striving to be in the centre of the action. Believe it or not there
were a couple of great mauls, with the Forwards binding on well and pushing the
pack forward. This allowed the Half back to “pick and pass” – good work.
The Back-line was much quicker into position and the “draw and pass” technique
was obvious on some occasions. Keep up the good work. It was good to hear the
Leprechauns talking to one another and calling the play, this will allow the
game to be played in an upright position. Remember, “Rugby
is a game played on your feet”! |

three very important aspects of the game of Rugby.
